Registering as a nurse is mandatory to be able to practice as a nurse or midwife in Australia. The Nursing and Midwifery Board are state run organisations responsible for the registration of nurses in accordance with the Nurses and Midwives Act, the primary piece of legislation in relation to this industry.

Note that (surprisingly) there is no universal approach to gaining a nursing registration in Australia. Each state runs it's own nursing program that manages and maintains the process for registering it's own nurses.

A 'certificate of registration' must be obtained by those who are yet to practice in Australia, and this certificate is gained from the relevant state or territory you wish to enrol in. Note that this is different from another requirement - your 'Authority to Practice' card.
