Hi,

Ive just been accepted into Careers Australia's Dip. Nursing (EN) program which commences mid Oct.

Do Careers Australia have a good reputation in the nursing community?
Also, are graduates from independent schools i.e. Non TAFE seen as inferior when it comes to the job selection process?

Cheers
AJ

Hi Aj,

Really interested to see your post. I was actually accepted to the October intake as well but unfortunately their VET FEE HELP was not through at the stage so I have had to postpone till the April intake. They have told me that they expect things to be organised by then. I would really like your feedback in regards to this organisation and how they operate. Are they supportive towards their students and they didn't seem to want to go into the subject of placements and where they would be there. Do they actually have these firmly in place or do they just hope that they can fit you in somewhere? Please could you get back to me I'm eager to hear your feedback. Oh yeah btw VETASSESS tomorrow night groan!!!

Cheers Jill

Hi all,

I started the diploma in October at the new Melbourne campus, however I’m taking a leave of absence to restart with the January intake due to illness.

So far I can only speak highly of the teachers. They're passionate, and seem very experienced and professional. It's still a bit early to judge, but generally I have a good feeling about the course/institution.

My only real concern so far is that we’re being marked on a ‘competent/not yet competent’ basis rather than normal grading; not having a GPA wouldn't give uni admissions much indication of my academic ability. I'm still waiting to hear back from the Nursing faculties from a few Melbourne unis regarding this, but I'm relieved to see that many unis require a STAT test or another entrance exam for mature aged entry anyway...

911: I can see that you think C.A isn't a good idea, but can you be more specific? I really want to know what I'm getting into. Thanks! : ]

Symphonic: I haven't had my first clinical placement yet, but we were told that they would *try* to match students someplace near where they live but they can't promise anything. It's not much but I hope that helps?

Mr Nurse and Laila,

Vetassess results were good enough to get me into The Gordon tafe, Careers Aust and Health Skills Aust however just on a whim I also decided to apply to some uni's and I have already had a Div 1 offer from Uni of Ballarat I know it sounds the other side of world but it actually was quite do-able for me after trying it out - accepted the offer and went to their open day - very impressive and I'm happy. Waiting to hear if I get any other uni offers if I don't I will take Uni of Ballarat happily!

I didn't sit the STAT test and yes the Pi is time consuming and goes on and on but as the Careers Counsellor at tafe suggested wrote it out on word first, got ideas off web sites about nursing qualities etc, asked my Bridging into Nursing teachers to act as referee's as I had absolutely no nursing history and for employment for last 5 yrs was running a family business. As you can imagine I was reference starved but I put my all into it and it all payed off.

I can hardly wait I didn't want to leave the uni today lol

This whole experience of doing the Bridging into Nursing course, Vetassess and VTAC uni application has been quite an ordeal but rewarding and worthwhile in the long run. Guess it just shows that when you really want to do something you just have to keep plugging away with it.

Mr Nurse I really hope that your experience at Careers Aust improves, I had a really positive feeling when I did my interview there and had recommended to some others to go and take a look at it. Anyway best of luck to both of you with your new careers.

Regards Jill
