Have just found out that I have been accepted into Southbank Tafe for the Diploma of Nursing (medically endorsed). Are now feeling panicky about the idea of study (nothing since year 12 in 1985!!!) and also coping with my four children under 12 and husband. My dream is to work with either mothers and babies (birthing suites) or paediatrics or palliative care. Could anybody give me any idea on whether there are jobs in these areas for EN's and what sort of roles they would have. Would you be spending most of your time wiping up vomit and emptying bedpans or is there more to it. I really have no idea and want to get it clear in my head before I commit to this course ( I have two weeks from now to make the decision!!). What is the pay like roughly per hour?

Any advice or tips or answers to my questions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

Hi there desperate2banurse,

There is heaps more to being a nurse than just vomit poo bedpans etc. Being an EEN you work under the direct or indirect supervision of a Registered Nurse. You have to be able to gather and use client based information from your obs collaborating with RN for clients care plans. You have to be able to differentiate between normal and abnormal observations, all the time relating back to RN. You have to understand the nursing process (took me ages to get the idea of this Nursing Process). Assessment, Nursing Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation. You will learn all of this and more during your studies. At 43 years of age I bit the bullet and am now in the 6 or 7 month of my een course. Assignments, referencing exams all scared the crapper out of me, but fortunatley my children aged form 21 to 13 help me. You should see the look on their faces when I say, "can you help your mummy with this." Studying after so many years out of school is a real shocker to the system. BTW I am a Assistant in Nursing which has helped a real lot. My course is a bit like distance education. there is alot of self directed learning, lots of reading, reading, reading and more reading, so you have to be really commited and disciplined to do it this way. Go to the Queensland Nursing Council website look at code of ethics for nurses, competancies for EEN. They have heaps of info on nursing. If this is what you really want to do then go for it. I am sure all us centralites will be happy to answer any queries you have during your course of studies.
