Are there any EEN's in Aged Care here ? What are you normal EEN's duties for the shift? Do you EEN's work from time to time on the floor with other PCA's ? I my friend is working like this and she is a EEN more than 6 years and now she was asked to start working from time to time on the floor with PCA's. Is this right and by the law!!! I think this is not fair !!! Does anyone of you EEN here has something to share similar experience ?

Hi Molly,

I am an EEN working in aged care. In my job, I do basically the same work as the RN, I oversee a ward, I do all the medications for this section, wound dressings, deal with Dr's, pharmacy, paperwork, obs, BSL's etc and a few other things. Occasionally if we are short staffed I help out with toileting or a shower or whatever needs doing, if I can.
I'm not sure what the law says about EEN's working as PCA's. I did do a PCA shift a couple of years ago and they only wanted to pay me at a PCA rate (I got paid my normal rate in the end after I questioned it). Is your friend with the ANF? Could be an idea to ask them. Hope this helps,

Sash : )

Hi Molly,

At my workplace, there are 60 residents divided into two areas, I oversee 30 and the RN oversees 30. It sounds a lot but it is very manageable (usually!). The thing that bothers me sometimes is that for doing pretty much the same work, I get paid a lot less. But I do love my job : )

Hi sach ! Thank you for your reply greatly. 30 residents sounds reasonable load for one person. It is important to love the job. More money for RN's and heaps of responsibility too. Thank you again. Molly

Hi Molly,
EENs at my work run the ward, do meds, wounds, deal with docs, pharmacy, paperwork, obs etc. but when they have time they are expected to help out the PCA's on the floor.
e.g. shower 1 resident in the morning to help the staff.
My ward is 22 bed high care so whatever help is given is much appreciated by the care staff.

hi vivies ! Thank you for your reply. Are there any RN's on or RN's are on call for the EEN's? Our RN's deal with the doc's and pharmacy and the other duties you wrote EEN's do.
