Hi everyone,

In March 2013 I applied for an Enrolled Nurse scholarship with NSW health and I am happy to say I was selected and I will start in May or June this year. Our starting dates havn't been given to us yet as there are 2 groups starting at the TAFE that I will be attending. All successful applicants have a guaranteed job on completion and registration with NSW health. YIPPEE!!

I was just wondering.... Does anyone know if the scholarship covers text books as well as tuition fee? When I called the TAFE they told me to ask the nursing teachers but no one picked up my call and I don't want to be a nuisance.  I know we have to pay the TAFE fees but was wondering about the text books.

Also does anyone know where I can get 2nd hand books if I need to pay for them? Any replies would be appreciated :-)

1st of all, CONGRATS!!

Not sure if the scholarship covers the books cost, but a standard scholarship should cover the tuition fee or at least part of it. Check with them for details before you start.

You can get tax refund for your books, shoes and even computers. Just  prove that they are related to your studies which isn't really hard.

Getting 2nd hand books will prevent you from getting tax refund, but they are heaps cheaper. Try ebays and from your seniors. Pretty sure they are more than happy to get some 'refund' back from those books, not to mention the useful notes that they might high-light during their studies. I remember seeing RLT model textbook (Brand new) for 80 dollars in my uni, but it cost like 40+ on the internet (Brand new too). I doubt there are free books out there, unless you happened to be on close terms with the owner/s or it belongs to a charitable organization.

Before you purchase the book, make sure those books are truely what you need, not what is recommended. There are recommended textbooks out there that you use for 1 module and useless for the rest of the course. Unless it is heavily utilised in the course, I do not recommend spending money on it. I know of people who did not buy a single textbook throughout the course by making full use of the library.

From a jealous reader. =P

Hi mummy2six,  I just wanted to say I too got a scholarship and start in Aug.  Yay for us!  I was wondering if you have any further info.  I too don't want to be a pest and ring them.  Have already rung once and was told my first block starts Aug 19th for 8 weeks and the a 4 week clinical followed by block 2 back at Tafe for 6 weeks and then roughly 4 weeks off over christmas.  Not sure what after that.  Do you know any more about how many clinical blocks there are and if they are all 4 week blocks??

I was told that text books are not covered but you probably have that info by now.  I'm only just finding out.

Do you know how long the course is exactly??  Is it 12mths or 18mths??  I can't seem to get that answer.

Take care,

lizza

That's great lizza.  Do you happen to know if how long the course actually runs for?  Is it 12mths or 18mths?  Also, I know my first clinical block is for a 4 week period.  Do you happen to know how many clinical blocks we do over the course of the Diploma and if they will be 4 week blocks also?  I have been given limited info and I think they are more interested in getting the July guys sorted first so I don't want to be a pest.  Hoping because you start sooner that you may have some info sent out already.  I have a young baby so I need to know as much as I can as soon as I can to organise her care when I'm on clinicals.  Any info would be great.  Good luck with the course.  I'm looking forward to it.
