Hi, I have a young family and from what I have read so do many of you out there... I'm am looking into starting an enrolled nursing course and want to know what will be expected from me when I start working.

I would love to hear about your experiences, what shifts/hours you were expected to do on a Grad Program and beyond, and how you juggle family life and children with shift work (and study).

Hi there tracey!

Good on you for making your decision and good luck with it ! I am going to be completing my diploma of enrolled nursing in december! I have my acute work placement in october which i have found out i will be doing in theatre, so i am very excited about that!

To answer question..

I have many women in my class who range from different ages! There are also women in my class like you who have a family and also young children, some even have babies! My course is full time 2 days a week!

luckily for us nurses we are in a career where we are able to go from one job to another as we are in demand! When looking for work you will have many opporunities and in most cases you are able to choose your hours and whn you want to work!

As an enrolled nurse there are so many different jobs you can take on and some can have the hours of 9:00 am till 5:00 pm or even starting early mornings at 7 am and finishing at around 3 pm ( DEPENDING WHERE YOU WORK) every work place is different and expect a various range of expectations from you.

i am based in south australia! to give you an idea as to some of the places you can work, have a look at this website!

i plan to work maybe in a doctors surgery or in theatre as a scrub or scout nurse, (you do not have to be a nurse to be a scrub nurse) you just have to get your foot in the door!

i hope this helps! i am studying at equals international, have a look at their website, hope it helps

Good luck

with your work placement you will be expected to do some crazy hours ( night shift) but it's not always like that ! Work places just like students to get the experience! but like i said there are so many jobs out there, you will find a job with the right hours to suit you and your family life :)

Thanks Sophia :)

Good luck with the rest of your course.

I know this is something I really want to do, it just a matter of convincing the other half that we can manage around the hours. I think he's worried about having to look after the kids on his own.
