Hi,

My names Jack, I'm in year 12 in Victoria. I'd really life to defer uni (arts/science) for a year, and in that year do a Div 2 course at TAFE. I did work experience at the Alfred, and loved it, but decided through this experience that ultimately I want to be a doctor. But I also want to study things for interest (hence the arts/science), and then apply for graduate-entry medicine. At the same time I still want to be a nurse; and I thought that working casually/part time as a Div 2 throughout uni would be fantastic .

So what I'm starting this pretty self-interested thread for, is to ask if anyone can see any gaping holes in the Div 2 portion of my plan..?

Thanks-in-advance! And I hope to contribute in a less self-involved way in the future :)

Hi Jack

I think it's sounds great what you are doing, and working up to waht you eventually want to do. With the Div 2 course you will be able to perhaps start working 1/2 way through the course as a nursing assistant, and with the shift work I am sure you will have time to study as well.

I think working as a nurse before becoming a Doctor will give you such insight into hands on care with patients. Good luck!!!!!

Hi Jack,

I think you are suggesting a very good path. I have said many times over many years that doctors should start out as nurses first. So many doctors have very little appreciation of a nurses' role and valuable input they have in the health care team.

Doctors that have qualified through the post-graduate entry also seem to be much more balanced in their approach, so I'm sure you will have everything going for you to become a great doctor.

Who knows, you may even decide that nursing is a better career option for you in the long run :)
