Hi, I'm 44 and a hairdresser with 3 boys and have decided that now I'm going to do something that I want to do!

Ive applied at Joondalup and Mount Lawley TAFE, and I won't find out if I can even enrol until January!!

As it is very competitive, does anyone know how they decide who gets to go to the next stage, which I think is the dreaded test? Apparently you get so many points for different things.

I have been told that they only take on about 60 students!

I have a trade certificate and life experience and I am working in our office at the moment.

If anyone could enlighten me, that would be great, thanks

Hi,

I am in the same position as you. I have applied to study enrolled nursing at Joondalup Tafe. I sat entrance test on the 25/10/13. Now it's a waiting game till January! It's sad how they won't even give one a clue if you are in or out.

Hi Hools003,

i am am a matured aged student at 27 and the process was pretty easy, I attended information session, sat my Vetassess test, attended group and individual interview and got told at my individual interview I was in. Had to wait for the acceptance letter, signed it and now I have completed my first year.

There are people from 18 to 50 in our class.

I know with our Tafe you needed to get over half in the entrance test. The individual and group interview they went on character and how you work in a team environment.

Hope this helps. But every Tafe might be different.

Hi Bubo3 & 90323, I have booked my test at joondalup on the 10th Dec! Thanks for your replies. im not sure we have to have an interview in WA. I haven't heard if we do or not.

I feel like my life is on hold until January when we find out if we have got a place!

It's not that hard.  I'm about to turn 47 and I started my diploma in nursing at GCIT in August 2012 (about to start my last semester).  I applied online, sent in all the appropriate paperwork and just had to sit a literacy and numeracy test (probably grade 10 level)  There would be 100 in my intake.

sat my numeracy and literacy test on 10th Oct, should find out around the 9th Jan if successful! unfortunately even if I do get in, I won't be able to accept as I am splitting with my partner and can't afford to study full time! Next best thing though, today I went for an interview for a traineeship in aged care! I will work my way up to enrolled nursing but slowly slowly.

Hi Guys !
I've applied at Joondalup tafe and sadly I didn't get in. I did well in my pre entry exam and I've finished year 12 although it has been some time since. I'm pretty sad I didn't even make it to the prep course. What to do now? Should I sit the STAT test and apply again mid year or should I do a certificate IV in aged care ? :*(

I applied through TAFE and was told to come in with documentation, I am mature age (38) and had my own business for 13 years, I thought they would have required an exam of some sort but I supplied my forms and was enrolled same day. I have enrolled with the Diploma of Nursing through GCIT TAFE (Gold Coast) I will be doing the online course and anyone in Australia can enrol into GCIT, they have around 5 weeks of residential school in total in the 18 months (over 3 time periods) the only downside is you would need to attend the residential school on the Gold Coast in that time, dates are provided for residential school on this link http://www.tafe.qld.gov.au/course-search/static/course/7756.html

400 hours of prac required but this can be done local to where you are located. Just food for thought for those who really want to get in without having to wait or doing other courses to get in. I know travel may not be possible for some. Good Luck !!

Mandatory Residential School Dates for January 2014 intake:
Full-time
Semester 1: 30 June 2014 - 11 July 2014
Semester 2: 10 November 2014 - 20 November 2014
Semester 3: 6 April 2015 - 9 April 2015

Part-time
Semester 1:   28 July 2014 – 8 August 2014
Semester 2:   27 January 2015 – 6 February 2015
Semester 3:   6 October 2015 – 9 October 2015

Hey there,

I applied at Wodonga tafe. Last year they had 70 applicants and only 40 spots. So I know how you feel when you say its highly competitive.  I first went to the information night, then handed in my application then sat the entrance test.  I'm now waiting to see if my scores were good enough to get an interview. I panicked and studied heaps for the vet assess test- specifically for the maths. I would say the maths is around a grade 5 level.  There were a few tricky questions but on the whole it wasn't as scary as i thought it would be. If you're a bit shaky on the whole maths thing check out mathsisfun.com

Good luck!
