HI everyone, I just finished my first clinical placement in Aged Care as part of my EN course at TAFE SA and I need to know is it possible to work as a Carer in aged care? I study at TAFE SA so please let me know if that is possible or not. Thank you!

I'm not sure to be honest, I'm doing the same course at another place in NSW which uses the TAFE SA curriculum. I do know that after the first placement at a TAFE here in NSW, you can work in Aged Care Centres.

Thank you for your reply roocooper. Do you know what kind of of document your TAFE issues students in order to work as carers?

TBH I know a few TAFE EN students working as carers. One managed to get a job prior to even doing their aged care placement, they just mentioned they were studying to be an EN.

Other than that, my caseworker has told me in the past, you can pretty much go get a job after your aged care placement. It's obviously easier to apply to the one you went to placement on as they would have a good idea of your work ethic already and may be open to letting you on board. I don't know if a potential employer would require paperwork to prove anything... I suppose you could show them your placement books as proof, unless they specifically ask for something like a cert 3 in aged care or transcript record for your EN studies...?

i am probably going to use Academic Transcripts and Placement Logbooks as proof of completion of Aged Care placement and I hope I will get a job starting from the place where i did my placement. Thank you all for your answers!

Hi.  You can use your transcript with successful completion of Aged care module and placement noted and work.  It also depends if you have completed your first aid and advanced first aid courses.

I recently completed aged care placement(dec 2014) but had previously completed a cert 3 in aged care.  I will say that 2 weeks clinical placement as div 1 or 2 does not really set you up for good PCA work though, so be aware that there are many situations you will encounter as a PCA that you were not necessarily exposed to doing 2 week placement, so be prepared!  I did 150 hours for my cert 3, and they were full 8 hour shifts, something you don't really do on nursing placement.  If you are confident, it will be better, but be confident in your abilities before you take on full PCA shifts.  Many of the students I am with work in home care as much easier to transition, if that is any help?
