Hello,

I was wondering if someone could help me with the pathways of becoming a nurse. I am a 2007 HSC student, and I did not get a good UAI. I have been looking around for way to get into nursing, and the best way it seems in through enrolled nursing with tafe. I just have a few questions such as :

- Is it difficult to get into the course?

- Is there any manner that I can furthur my studies after I finish? ( Uni ? )

- Will it be any trouble if I already enrolled in a tafe course ? ( Hospitality management, I realised it was not what I wanted to do )

- Is there any exam I have to sit to gain entry?

Your help would be most appreciated,

Abraham

Sorry, I forgot to note, is there any specific mark requirements needed?

From what I read, I need a band 2 in HSC english, which I did thankfully score, however I also need a
band 4 in SC maths? (which I did not get)

Hi Abraham,

The best way to find out the requirements for entry into an Enrolled Nursing course in your State (I assume you're in NSW?) would be to do a bit of research yourself on the net. A great place to start would be the TAFE NSW site. Some useful links:

For the Cert IV course: http://www.tafensw.edu.au/howex/servlet/Course?Command=GetCourse&CourseNo=3262

For the Diploma course: http://www.tafensw.edu.au/howex/servlet/Course?Command=GetCourse&CourseNo=4393

And this link for a Cert II course that will give you a taste of what EN is all about: http://www.tafensw.edu.au/howex/servlet/Course?Command=GetCourse&CourseNo=17592

Good luck with your goals.

Mara.

The uni I did my degree have something called The Tertiary Preparation Programme. This is for people who did not get enough marks at school to get into Uni or for people like me for whom it was a long time since they were in high school. This programme takes 6 months and covers maths and english, once you have done the programme you are then eligible to enter Uni as a direct entry student. You are also almost guarenteed a place in your desired course.

Maybe the local Unis around you have something similar??

Hi Abraham,

I finished year 12 in 2006 and missed out by half a point on getting in to Uni of Canberra. I had considered the EN pathway, and would have liked to have done it, but at the time I didn't have the work experience requirements to get into the EN course at CIT. I didn't want to move away, even though I could have got into most of the other uni's in NSW, so I ended up doing it by correspondence through the university of south australia, with some hopes of transferring over. The downside was the credit wasn't worth transferring over, but I can finish my study at the end of next year :) motivation is difficult sometimes, but if it is something you really want to do and you are motivated enough it could be an option, depending on your UAI, everyone draws their own line to good and bad. I thinkt he scores to get into UniSA were in the low 60's, I don't know exactly what you got. I know Charles Darwin Uni and Uni of central QLD do it externally too, don't know what their scores are like.

I'm pretty sure the trainee EN applications are closed until the round for next september, so hopefully either you applied or decided against that! If you applied then good luck, just because your scores weren't as good as someone else's doesn't mean you wont be a better nurse... if it's what you really want to do then you can find a way to do it :)

Good luck!

Hi Im at the end of my EEN study and yes It has been a rocky road. I have been nursing as a AIN as they call it up here in queensland Assistant In Nuesing for 15 years now, and at the tender age of 43 I dicided to go to Tafe.I would like to say to all who are thinking about becoming a nurse, just go for it, jump in and dont let fear of not having enough schooling as I did not finish school. Tafe is great they have people there to help you through the course. So good luck!
