Hi, I would like to become a Nursing Assistant and live in Mandurah, WA, which has Tafe courses, but I'm unsure which course to take, mostly pointing to Aged Care III course, but am not sure about doing Prac., in Aged Care home, How does this help? Which other courses could I take? Thanks in advance.

Hiya Budda1, I think age care certificate III is the basic starter for going into nursing. I would recommend you to pursue this. Certificate III will provide you with the basic understanding of how you can play a support or active role in the provision of ADLs (Activities of Daily. Living) ADLS include hygiene and oral care, mobility and transfers, re-positioning and etc, etc. It also introduces you to what the common problems faced by the aged - skin tears, mobility issues, sleep patterns, dementia - wandering and behaviourial issues and etc. The responsibility of carers extends to being the eyes and ears of doctors and other nurses - in short its an important role. Example - Whilst showering a patient, you might notice pressure injuries developing and by informing ENs/RNs a=or doctors, interventions could be implemented. Sometimes, you can initiate the interventions yourself too.

Whilst its says Age Care Cert III, your qualification is also acceptable for work as an Assistant in Nursing in hospitals too.

Good luck and congrats for pursing this course.

Budda

I don't know if the below link is useful. I stumbled across this paid AIN traineeship program through TAFE and Perth metro public hospitals. The course looks great - plus you get paid while you study!

http://www.nursing.health.wa.gov.au/docs/reports/AIN_Information_Sheet.pdf

As you can see it is a Cert III Health Services Assistant (Acute Care) - which sounds better than Aged Care - if, in fact, you want to work in hospital system and not aged care.

I can't see that they do it at Peel Campus though.

Just thought I would share the info. I am currently enrolling to do EN course through Challenger TAFE (after completing Cert IV Prep For EN) otherwise I would probably have done this traineeship first.

Worth considering if you can commute or check out if it is available in Mandurah. It appears to be increasing in popularity - so if it isn't now - it may should be offered down there.

Cheers
Rebecca

Schizo, sometimes it's hard to tell if you're shit stirring or not haha. If you refer to the course descriptions on http://www.tafensw.edu.au

the two courses are practically the same

i actually got accepted into aged care half-way through year 11 2010. i have my acceptance letter but did not finish the course, or get to start it, just got all the course materials in preparation before my parents made me finish my HSC instead of become an enrolled TAFE nurse. I had a plan-

Cert 3 Aged Care

Cert 4 Enrolled Nurse

Diploma Enrolled Nursing

Bachelor of Nursing cadet with the RADF (Army cadet/nursing recruit, aged 18+) during Uni... as close as one can get to the only hospital-trained nurse system but sooo worth it

Graduate Certificate in Nursing (Emergency) 1 year

Grad Cert Nurse (Critical Care) 1 year

Grad Diploma in Midwifery UWS 1 year full-time, paid

Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) --> final career goal (Nurse Practitioner-Primary Healthcare in rural and remote - Bathurst/Orange areas)

@upcomming RN.

You must be almost finishing year 12 yeah? =D

Dont bother doing cert 3 aged care / diploma nursing ( you wont be able to do cert IV as of next year anyways) just apply straight for uni and if you dont get in then u can always do diploma as a pathway.

Trust me if you definatly want to be a Registered nurse and your comming straight from high school dont waste your time and MONEY with all the other crap like cert 3 in aged care.I didn't bother doing cert 3. Im doing my cert IV nursing at the moment as a pathway to uni because i woudnt of been able to get into B nursing as i was a school leaver.

:)

GOODLUCK!
