Hi everyone,

i am looking into studying the bachelor of nursing at ACU melbourne, I have nearly completed the Div 2 course at TAFE. Has anyone had the experience of studying the bachelors at ACU as a mother of very young children? It's it possible, and is ACU family friendly and flexible? I am leaning towards the bachelor of nursing in mental health, as I have an interest in this area. Also how is the parking on campus at ACU?

thanks heaps

Hello,

I got an email telling me you inboxed me. For some reason it won't let me see it. I assume it's for advice on the Bachelor of Nursing (Mental Health) course.

I'm a week away (plus exams!) from completing first year. In first year everyone has the exact same subjects (Bach Nursing (Mental Health), Bach of Nursing (Business) and Bach Nursing). Us full time students have four units per semester. Depending on which units you might have as little as one hour per unit or up to seven each week.

My timetable this semester is Wednesdays 9-3pm and Thursday 2-6pm.

ACU are very flexible with their timetables. The students put them together themselves. You have to be very quick or all of the good times go quickly. I don't have any children so it is hard for me to say that you will cope, but this semester I had only 1.5 days on campus. The rest is all done in your own time at home. I don't go to any of the lectures (if I did I'd be on campus for 2 full days). The lectures are all uploaded online which means you can watch them from home or download them as a podcast to listen to on the train.

There is a parking lot right at our campus in Melbourne but it fills up very quickly in the morning and if it is full by the time you arrive there isn't a lot of parking elsewhere. The council are very quick with their fines too, so if you park on the street make sure the meter is always topped up.

Some mums start the course part time (2 units a semester instead of 4) just to see how they go and if they're coping they increase up to a FT workload. Maybe that is something to think about?

If you want to know anything else just let me know :)

Thanks for the response Sarah. Congrats in getting through most of the first year. I am completing the diploma of Nursing part time at the moment and I am at school 3 days a week. i find the placements have been the most difficult thing to juggle with childcare arrangements. i am hoping that if i get into acu i will have less contact hours for tutorials and lectures.

Just a few more questions. how many mental health subjects are in the second year of the acu degree? can you arrange placements close to home? Are that many students in the mental health stream of the nursing course, are there many mature age students?  sorry about the volume of questions! I really appreciate your insight.

In the year I've been at uni I've only come across two other BSNMH students. Hopefully there are more hiding somewhere or our classes will be very small :)

I would say 1/3 of students or more are mature age - I'm 26 myself. I just had a look at the course outline and it looks like there's only two MH specific units, but more MH placements than the usual nursing bachelor.

Have a look there for unit information
