I am currently in Year 11, and leaving at the end of this year. I have researched abit about nursing courses, and all of them seem to require a HSC or Year 12 equivilent. I am passionate about this feild, and would love a career in it. Just wondering if anyone found a pathway into nursing that you would like to share with me! and also if doing your cert 3 in aged care helped.

Hi Em,

Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge will respond to your questions, however I can give you some information from my own experience.

I am a middle aged Mum, however I left school at the end of Year 11 (like you're planning to). Although I always wanted to study nursing etc I ended up doing random jobs for awhile and then had kids. I completed my Cert 3 in Aged Care a few years ago but have only started working in the field around six months ago.

I totally love it and now wished I had studied nursing years (and years!) ago.

You would have no problems getting into a Cert 3 in Aged Care course, but if you were going to go this option I would then make sure you go on to study your Cert 4.

Reason being is if you end up wanting to do a Bachelor of Nursing you will need a Cert 4 as a minimum entry requirement if you haven't finished Year 12 (or Diploma of Nursing).

I don't think you'd have any problem getting into a Diploma of Nursing course.

You could always start by getting your Cert 3 in Aged Care, getting practical experience working in that field and studying part time for your nursing degree...

Could you do some work experience in an aged care facility while you're still in school to see if you like it? I only say this because the actual hands on side of things working in aged care may be a little less glamorous than you imagine and the shock of showering an 80 to 90 odd year old (male or female) may be a little overwhelming at first :-0

I would recommend finishing year 12 if it is at all possible for you.  It's one more year now but will give you many more options in the future.
Saying that, you don't need to have finished year 12, have a cert IV or done any previous study to gain access to a Nursing degree course.  I know because I left school at 16 with no qualifications, since then I did many things before going to university but schooling and/or TAFE wasn't one of them.
I accessed a degree through a mature age entry program and was offered places with 2 different universities.  You should also take a look at Enrolled Nurse courses as they might suit your needs as well.
