I live in an area where the nursing shortage is huge, and God knows what we would do without the help of nurses from other countries. It is their own individual choice to come; most have left close family behind and it must be so hard for them. Obviously Australia has something to offer. But also why is there this shortage in nurses? Old question I know, and I'm sure everyone has the answers to "why are we here?" *grin*.

Hi tropicana,

buggered if I know why we are here. Yes it would be hard for them having to leave their families. sometimes at work we have had agency staff that have come from different country, probably have not been in aust for very long. Unfortunately they have know idea what to do, and what makes it worse is that alot of residents do not want them to attend to them. Yes they do have a lot to contend with like different culture, different environment and also prejudice.

It puts a lot of pressure on existing staff, but you just grin and bear it. and think how u would feel yourself if u in their boots

I have an interesting story for you all: I used to be an TESOL teacher (taught english as a second language) in Mexico. At one stage I gave a student daily lessons to prepare her for the Oral english exam so she could work in the USA. She'd already passed the written/comprehension TOEFL test, had been studying her butt off and passed her Nursing exams to practise in the USA and this was the final step. A Californian hospital paid for her, her husband and 2 kids to fly from Mexico City to California so she could do a meet and greet, interviews etc. All expenses paid. She got the job. Why did she want to make the move ?? To have a better and safer life for her kids. She found out upon her return that her house had been broken into while she was away (how ironic).. that just re-affirmed her decision to move.. Want to know what's funny ?? He husband is a doctor, and he made the move for his family and will study in the USA to try and practise medicine there. It's a bit of a ramble but I thought it was an interesting situation when I met her.
