Hello,

I am just wondering for future reference, as I will soon be graduating, what is the starting salary for Graduate Nurses in their first year of grad year in the hospital that has accepted them. Assuming it is the Royal Children's Hospital, I am male, 25 years old and I am given the choice to stay on permanently years after. What is my base salary per hour/week in this first grad year during weekdays, weeknights, weekends, weekend nights, and are there any differences between the above?? How will this change over the years I work at the hospital as I plan to (hopefully) stay loyal to the Royal Children's Hospital for as long as I can. What kind of opportunities are there within the hospital to further my nursing education by doing specific type training within the hospital such as paediatrics, neonatal intensive care, oncology, midwifery etc. After how many years of working at the Royal Children's Hospital, would I be allowed to become a stay at home parent during the week full time, but still work weekends Friday to Mondays during day/night/combination of these??

1) Starting salary.
Salary should be 1009.10/week excluding allowance and tax in 3/2014. (It will be 984.50 if you start before 3/2014.) And this refers to public hospital. Private and age care facilities have their own pay scale.

2) Are you able to stay after 1st year new grad?
If I did not remember wrongly, they will only offer you 1 year contract. After 1 year, it will depends if they need/want you or not.

3) Shift allowance and rate for sat/sun. (Copy and pasted)

55.5 Shift allowance 86

(a) In addition to any other rates prescribed elsewhere in this Agreement an
Employee whose rostered hours of ordinary duty finish between 6.00 p.m. and
8.00 a.m. or commence between 6.00 p.m. and 6.30 a.m. shall be paid an
amount equal to 2.5% of the rate in Schedule B for Registered Nurse Grade 2,
Year 1 per rostered period of duty.
(b) Provided that in the case of an Employee working on any rostered hours of
ordinary duty, finishing on the day after commencing duty or commencing after
midnight and before 5.00 a.m. he or she shall be paid a night duty allowance as
set out in Schedule B.
(c) Provided that the shift allowance shall be calculated to the nearest 10 cents, an
exact amount of 5 cents in the result going to the higher figure.
(d) Provided further that this clause shall not apply to Director of Nursing and Deputy
Director of Nursing

28 Special Rates for Saturdays and Sundays
(a) All rostered time of ordinary duty performed between midnight on Friday and
midnight on Sunday shall be paid for at the rate of time and a half.
(b) Provided that the following rate of payment shall be made where the Saturday or
Sunday duty involves: Work in excess of the prescribed rostered hours - double
time for the excess period;
(c) This clause shall not apply to Directors of Nursing and Deputy Directors of
Nursing.

4) What kind of opportunities are there?
Depends on route you intend to go. here are a few routes you can go and each requires you to do different things. (There are more, but do some research on your own. =p)

Hands on - Clinical nurse specialist (CNS), Nurse practitioner (NP), Nurse accredited surgeon assistant (NASA, note only private hospital)
Paperwork - Clinical nurse educator(CNE), Nurse unit manager (NUM).
Research - Nurse researcher

Clinical nurse consultant (CNC)as well... But not sure where they fall under...

5) When can you become part time RN.
As long as you feel adequately trained and there is a vacancy available. I have seen year 2 RNs go part time and the ward is happy to accommodate their wish.

Best of luck in getting a grad position!!

Thank You so much Seraphim!! That's definitely great information!! As I will be Division 1 Nurse what Grade would that put me in? As I saw you say Registered Nurse Grade 2?? What kind of hours can I expect to get in my first grad year? Do you have any ideas or contacts within the Royal Children Hospital that I may use to help me have a chance to get in there? When I apply for my grad year, will I be able to choose where abouts I am located such as ward? Thank You again for your information :D

I'm not in Victoria, hence I'm not able to provide you any of the information you required regarding Royal Children Hospital in Victoria...
You will have a preference list you can fill up, but that does not mean you get placed according to your preference. It is subjected to availability.
