I'm currently enrolled to start uni next year at CQU Rockhampton externally. I've searched the web and there definitely isn't any shortages on positions, however I do want to know what sort of hours nurses work, I know that generally it will be shift work ie nights, weekends but does this ever change?? Is it possible to be a full time nurse working a normal 9-5 Mon- Friday week?

If you want to consistently work from 9-5, Monday to Friday, perhaps you could become a practice nurse. You would be employed in a general practice, providing annual health assessments, creating care plans, giving immunisations and performing pap smears, performing ECGs (electrocardiographs), performing pulmonary function tests (including spirometry) and helping GPs provide diabetes annual checks. You could be in charge of wound management and dressings. You would provide nursing services, such as blood pressure checks, ear syringing, assisting with minor surgical procedures, removing sutures, surgical clips and staples, plastering, venepuncture and cannulation, CPR and triage of very unwell patients. The duties a practice nurse performs and the hours he or she works vary from practice to practice. Generally practice opening hours are normal business hours or slightly more, e.g. 8-6 Monday to Friday and 8-12 Saturday, so a full-time practice nurse works 38+ hours within these opening hours.

Nurses can also work from 9-5 Monday to Friday in management, administration, or in pharmaceutical companies.

I work Mon-Fri as an operating room nurse in elective surgery. Shift work was not for me because I hated the rotating shifts. I felt like I was constantly jet lagged when they put you on 4-5 nights per roster, give you three days off and then back on days. Some people can handle shift work better than others I guess. Because we're short of staff in trauma theatres sometimes I'll work a Saturday or Sunday for extra $$$ but because I'm on a 5 day roster they can't make me work more than 5 days in a row.

There are other areas of nursing that offer these types of shifts. Pre-operative assessment, Occ Health, Day surgery centres, Perioperative nursing such as anaesthetics, scrub/scout in elective surgery, some CVIU clinics have these hours as well.

When I've worked on the wards in hosptials the shifts have been 7-3 or 1/2-9/10. Over night shifts are normally 10-7. But I guess it depends on what hopsital you work at :)

Research Nursing Coordinator type roles (eg. running clinical drug trials or observational studies) can often be in an outpatients setting, private practice and usually involved office hours/day time hours. I've been doing it for 15 years and I love a lot of things about the job. The hours are great.
