'Why Be a Nurse?". What other occupation is so a multi-faceted that it 'touches' every vital area of a human being. Nurses are vital. Caring for another human being means being 'present', and having the privilege to touch others lives, sometimes when they are vulnerable, but always with compassion. Nonetheless we 'touch' others holistically where holicism is defined as encompassing the major areas of ALL people's lives, no matter what their socio-economic status, race, gender, age or culture; to have the opportunity to nurture or be assisted to nurture to that of acceptable Wellbeing; nurses have that amazing role. How privileged we are and with that our own nursing and personal growth occurs Life Long. Nurses have the awesome opportunity to enhance fellow humanbeings lives.

This is all true but remember that you dont really get much thanks for what you do and over the 20 years I have been nursing people have become more entitled so we are expected to go beyond our roles ( according to them) and we are also becoming more exposed to litigation. YOu would be surprised ( or not) at how many people who have never held a job are largely uneducated and who are not proactive about thier health know the ins and outs of every single government system and are willing to put your job on the line to get what they want. Sounds really jaded I know . I love working in an acute mental health unit but lately have seen the other side of the people we supposedly do so much for. Also for many years I have realised that the majority of patients couldnt care less how many hours you work, what you get paid or when was the last time you spent time with your family ...just as long as you are there at their beck and call waiting on them they couldnt give a toss really. Nurses do a great job but overall do not get the thanks they deserve or the pay.
