Hi there,
Just wandering if anyone knows the best family friendly uni that offers this course? I live in country Vic (Mildura) and I have 3 children under 4, a husband that works full time and no other babysitters! I am applying to CSU, CDU, uniSA, CQU and maybe james cook uni.
I have contacted them all but I am not getting the answers that I want. I just want to know about the residential schools or clinical teaching blocks as some may call it, and the placements.
Some uni's offer the on campus part for a week a semester, some ive heard offer one week per year.
Anybody know?
Anybody in the same situation as me?

Hi mrsmedic85,
I am also applying for bachelor nursing in 2012. I live in Margaret river in WA and with 2 kids and a husband that works away studying externally is really my only option. I'm not sure which uni is the most family friendly-would love to find out! I was also wondering if anyone is currently doing this course externally, could you give me an idea of the study load for first year? And also whether you found the support adequate studying online.
Any comments re this course and studying with kids in tow would be greatly appreciated!

hi, im an EN and i got a place at CDU this year to go into 2nd yr.
while i can admit that i had a quite a few personal distrations upon commencement, i really didnt find that external study worked for me. i had a friend also doing it with me, and neither one of us liked it very much. i found i was very lacking in direction and felt i was floating around feeling a bit lost without the direction that comes from attending classes physically and being able to get immediate feedback from other students and lecturers. i found all the notes online kind of confusing, even though i had studied at RMIT internally last year and all our notes were online also- i just felt i couldnt get my head around what i was meant to be doing and when...my friend was the same.

i do however have a friend who has done the same course and has loved it- and is almost finished. id asked lots of people for advise on doing it externally, and got mixed answers- so i was keen to give it a go and make up my own mind. the verdict in the end was that i didnt like it, and knew that i was better off studying internally when i can make the time. so now im applying for an internal course for 2012, but will defer it till 2013 if i get in.

hope i dont put you off, thats not my intention. i just know that its good to go into something like this with your eyes wide open to the fact that it may or may not work. for some folk its works well, for others it wont.
my advise would definitely be NOT to start off with a full time load. make life easy on yourself and start off with just a couple of subjects until you feel comfy with the whole situation and how its gonna work for you and your life/family. i really think that will help alot. im certain some people handle it well, but id advocate being part time till you know that you know what your doing and whats really involved. better to start off slow and increase your workload once you know its all going well, than to be overwhelmed and not continue. In mine and my friends case we at least have the option of being able to study internally at some stage- but if this is your only option, id say ease into it- even if you only do 1 subject first semester.

Hi! I am currently looking into studying via CQU, they have been very helpful and I have them to be extreamly easy to understand so far in regards to how they run their courses etc. where as my local uni SCU who dont offer bach nursing via DE were very confusing and not really all that eager to help anyway I am waiting for a program advisor to contact me from CQU to help me figure out how I would approach my study to suit my family commitments etc. They offer the course entirely via DE but you do need to attend residential school she said about 3 or 4 days at a time over the course of you study the dates for that are going to be out over the next couple of weeks, work placement is in your local area apparently, hope this helps Im trying to get my head around making it all work!!!

Good luck :-)

I am now at CSU and the have residential schools for each unit, except for 2 or 3 units which are not run by the nursing school. Depending on how many units per semester you do will tell you how many residential schools you need to attend. They are from 2-5 days in length and are run in Bathurst. Everyone goes to the same res school.

Residential schools and placement calanders are available on the nursing school website at all times. Apparently the 2012 calanders will be available in Sept/Oct, so plenty of time to arrange other things for the whole year.
