Can anyone tell me how many days a week the fulltime Diploma of Enrolled Nursing is? I want to do the course next yr but cant afford to give up work while I study. Also how much extra study would you expect to put in at home to keep up with the course? Im in South Australia.

Thankyou

Carol.

Hi it depends on where you go. Im at careers australia in adelaide and we are there 2 days a week though we where offered and most have taken it up and extra day during stage 2 which is anatomy and physiology as it is a pretty full on stage. I have worked during this, the first stage was 3 days a week but I had to reduce to 2 days a week to be able to do the extra day at school. Yesterday I gave my resignation as I felt I wasnt able to apply as much time as I wanted to, to my study and my kids as well as working in my job as a community aged carer dealing with mental health and demntia as it was just too demanding of me.
You will work it out once you start as to how much you can work and how much stress each stage gives you as it varies .
Anyway good luck with it all.
Where are you planning on doing it???

Thanks amare for the info.Is it a full day at Tafe? At the moment im only working 3 days and getting some Newstart as my job dosent pay enough to survive on solely. Im hoping to change over to Austudy if im studying fulltime.

Im applying to do it at Victor Harbor. They offer/day and night classes. I dont really want to do the night classes, i hope it is 2 days a week so i can still work 3 days. Quitting just isnt an option, one good thing though is my son is older and left school so dont need to worry about looking after little one's on top of work and study.

Do you find your doing much study at home as well to keep up?

Hi Carol
Im pretty sure tafe is one or 2 full days eg 9.30 - 4.30pm but thats just what I know of Noarlunga Tafe a few years ago.
The study load at home is a bit but while im working I just make sure I put a few hours in every week night and if I need ot then I study during the day on the weekend.
My youngest is 10 and my 2 eldest are 18 so the 18 yr olds have taken alot on so I can do this, they do heaps around the house for me and do the school runs for me to lighten the load :)

Thanks amare:) One more question but how much did the diploma cost to do? My job network provider thinks they may be able to assist with about $1000 toward the cost. Otherwise ill probably apply for a Wyatt Scholarship.

Also just interested did you stay working in Aged Care or did you move on to hospital based work once you became enrolled?

Hi Carol
I tried to get into naorlunga tafe for 4 yrs without sucess way too many applying cause its only a few thousand, I am going through Careers Australia now and that will end up costing me close to $14000 without text books. A big difference in price but that accept heaps more ppl a yr than tafe do. I am paying mine through VET help which is pretty much HECs debt but to follow my dream its what I had to do :( Im not going into aged care on completion after 5 yrs I need a change from that area.

It may be different where you are, but in QLD the fulltime EEN diploma is 5 days a week. Sometimes you get half days but only usually one a week. It's an 18 month course with 140 hours prac placement each term.

Sounds different to SA. Rang my local Tafe and their class contact time is 1 day per week.

Hi Carol,

I'm in the same position as you. I didn't get into the EN course last year as there was too much competition even though I met the requirements, so I'm trying again, and even sitting the TABS test as well just to increase my chances... this was recommended by SATAC. If all else fails then only option for me is private RTO which is triple what TafeSA fee's are... I find that rude in a way seeing as there's such a shortage yet no incentive.

Thought I'd throw this question out there, anybody who has studied through an RTO for there EN - what has your experience been like? Would you recommend it? From researching some RTO's, you can get your EN/Div2 Diploma in a year as apposed to Tafe...

Hi Julz

What state are you in?

I have no idea what competition is like in my area (victor harbor) but seeing as they're not holding another course here until semester 2 2011..I thought id do a certificate 3 in something to better my chances as I dont meet the criteria atm.Id rather do that than sit the test (im worried the maths will let me down) I'll be so disappointed if i dont get a place, it has literally taken me yrs to decide what to do with myself!

Not sure about private but they're are so expensive! Im sure a few people here have done it though.

Hey Carol,

I'm in Adelaide, so I've applied to the campuses around the area.

When I didn't get a place SATAC advised it was due to the popularity of the course and competition.

Fingers crossed I get in this time around.

Im currently doing mine at careers australia in the city. Its a 2 yr course and cost just under $14 000 which is probably the highest ive seen it at but the only place apart from uni where u can get it under the vet fees which is simialar to hecs fees. Run up debt now pay later lol
I am really enjoying the course though and its only 2 days a week.

Hi Julz

Fingers crossed you get in this time:) and for me too.

Amare i may do that too if i dont get in. Do they have intakes twice a yr? It seems alot of money but the good thing is no upfront cost and you only pay it back through the tax system when you are earning above a certain amount. At least i think it works like HECS or HELP as its called now. And really when you think about it wouldnt art degrees cost that much? I know people who've done art degrees that didnt even get a job out of it. At least with this course you actually qualified as something at the end.
