Hi was hoping there was someone who had tried both face to face study and also studied via CQ Uni distance. I was not very happy with the face to face study, have read some positive comments on these forums about CQ uni distance study, am hoping that this course is more stimulating and interesting and the staff have a bit of passion about what they teach.

Also what did they find most challenging about the distance study with CQ Uni and how have they found other students are going, or gone, with studing here.

Cheers

I've done distance studies although in languages (Italian) but the principles of Italian language learning by distance are somewhat similar to nursing as an undergrad by distance (both languages and nursing require prac skills - ie speaking, and clinical for nursing). The theory is a tad dry in most university nursing course, however amongst my fellow 17- and 18-year-olds + 19-year-old year 12 students/"prospective nurses", Clinical nursing/clinical practicum placements as the registered nurse teachers/lecturers call them are very interesting. If you have not being to a nursing lab in a Uni, then go on the next open day! Or- if you have not done clinical in a hospital FOR REAL, then do it!

Got my Resuscitation/CPR certificate in 2009, so need to do a refresher despite retaining my knowledge. However, I've done CPR supervision/obs of a mannequin/dummy and also on a dummy, intravenous fluids - running an IV - not starting one with a needle, just changing the fluid bag and the drip in Mrs Jones's cannula at UWS. (Mannequins only for non-nurses)

It was a great open day last Sunday in Parramatta. UTS has events on their calendar at UTS Nursing Midwifery and health. I don't now about CQ and if it's only that's not well know in NSW/Canberra/Queensland, then generally it's a nursing school which doesn't have a great reputation amongst senior nurses. Ask Schizo... she's a qualified nurse supposedly (just hearsay on the Internet really without a degree or seeing her on the wards she could be anyone, even a 17-year-old boy (18 on 18/09/2011) like me.

Hi Trinn,

I'm doing nursing part-time at CQU via distance education. I think the biggest challenge for me has been staying motivated. Generally the res schools come round fairly quickly which boosts my motivation.

The course is very well run and I have found the lectuers very enthusiastic and professional. It's not one of the biggest unis in Queensland thats true. However, if you've got what it takes to be a good nurse CQU will help you achieve it.

Thanks Abbeyside,

Thanks for the post. Have you met any students who are now working? Also what subjects can you choose as an elective? I don't think I'm interested in the three specialty courses. I'm interested in community nursing and rural with a focus on health promotion/education.

Cheers

Hi Trinn,

I don't work in health care yet. I've met plenty of nurses but to be honest I've never really asked which uni they attended. They have a very high success rate in placing graduates in jobs.

You don't have to choose any of the 3 electives you've seen. You can select another science course. I know some who have selected forensic science, etc. I'm sure you will find one that suits the path you want to follow.

Regards,
