I've done distance studies although in languages (Italian) but the principles of Italian language learning by distance are somewhat similar to nursing as an undergrad by distance (both languages and nursing require prac skills - ie speaking, and clinical for nursing). The theory is a tad dry in most university nursing course, however amongst my fellow 17- and 18-year-olds + 19-year-old year 12 students/"prospective nurses", Clinical nursing/clinical practicum placements as the registered nurse teachers/lecturers call them are very interesting. If you have not being to a nursing lab in a Uni, then go on the next open day! Or- if you have not done clinical in a hospital FOR REAL, then do it!
Got my Resuscitation/CPR certificate in 2009, so need to do a refresher despite retaining my knowledge. However, I've done CPR supervision/obs of a mannequin/dummy and also on a dummy, intravenous fluids - running an IV - not starting one with a needle, just changing the fluid bag and the drip in Mrs Jones's cannula at UWS. (Mannequins only for non-nurses)
It was a great open day last Sunday in Parramatta. UTS has events on their calendar at UTS Nursing Midwifery and health. I don't now about CQ and if it's only that's not well know in NSW/Canberra/Queensland, then generally it's a nursing school which doesn't have a great reputation amongst senior nurses. Ask Schizo... she's a qualified nurse supposedly (just hearsay on the Internet really without a degree or seeing her on the wards she could be anyone, even a 17-year-old boy (18 on 18/09/2011) like me.
