I am going to apply for Div 1 this year becuase I finish my Div2 course in June. I have decided I really want to go on and further my qualification because I am really enjoying studying and I really do love nursing. Never thought I would find something I love this much and never thought I would actually love nursing this much either!!!

Anyway my question is for those who went on to do Div 1 after Div 2. Did you apply for first or second year entry into the course and which path would you recommend? Did you ask for RPL (recognition of prior learning) and get any subjects off?

I have considered applying for first and second year entry and even though it might seem like I am insane I think I would actually prefer to start from the beginning. I know I might go over the same stuff but I would rather be a better nurse and also not place so much pressure on myself as I would have being a second year ykwim.

What advice have you got for me??

Thanks

Hi Keeshy,

You should check with the university you're interested in studying at. From my understanding you'd start 2nd year uni after completing div2, EN(med) up here in QLD. There wouldn't be any point in doing first year as you would've covered those topics through your existing course.

I'm actually doing a dual degree program by studying at TAFE & Uni at the same time. Takes a damned long time, but will be worth it in the end as I'll be able to work as a Div2/EN(med) whilst studying at uni until I graduate as an RN.

Good to hear all is going well with your studies. I started a couple of months ago and it's starting to come together. Good luck with the Uni entry.

Hi Keeshy,

I was in the same position as you 2 years ago. I finished my Div 2 in July 2006, and like you I absolutely loved nursing and knew that I would go on to study Div 1. I applied for mid year entry to Deakin, not really expecting to get in, but I did, and started my Div 1 2 weeks after finishing my Div 2. At Deakin Div 2's get 8 credit points, or the equivalent of 33 % of the course credited. How it works is that all Div 2's, whether applying at beginnning of year through VTAC or applying directly to the uni at mid year, are exempted from all Year 1 Semester 1 subjects.

The rest of the course has some exemptions for electives and also aged care subject in Year 3 Semester 1. What this basically means is that the course still takes 21/2 years to complete, and although it is still classed as full time the workload is much less. This semester (Year 3), I only have 2 single unit subjects, this is a big help to all us mums - we often wonder how we would cope with a greater workload, this is enough stress!!

I think that you would probably cope really well with advanced standing, particularly as you will have just completed your Div 2 and it will still be fresh in your mind, and especially if you have had good A & P in your current course. Good luck with everything and hopes this helps

There is a bridging course that is pretty full on apparently too and I am not sure if I want to put that pressure on myself.

Lauz that info you gave me is great. The way you have done is is the way I would love it to work out for me. I might send some emails off tomorrow. Thanks very much :)

Oh can I ask when does Mid year intake start?

From memory I think I applied for mid year intake in May sometime - best to ring or email the unis to check if they have mid year intake. When I was looking the only 2 were Deakin and RMIT, but RMIT turned out only to be for hospital trained Div1 to upgrade to degree. Deakin also had a summer semester intake ( for Div 2's), the people that did that had to do summer from November to February, very fast and intensive, then they had a few weeks off and started straight into semester one (Year 2) - by the end of last year they were exhausted. I also think that some of them had to do it at Geelong and then transferred to Burwood after summer.

Thats summer intensive course you mentioned is that briding type course I wanted to avoid which is why I didnt want to start at second year. Its alot of pressure as you say and I dont want to end up exhausted like that esp as I have a young family.

I am going to conctact the uni's (I go to RMIT now ) and will find out what they offer. I would like to do it at Deakin Geelong but its the waterfront campus which is just a bit too far for me. If it was at the other campus I would be fine.
