I've just started the grad entry program at usc this semester and already I'm finding that I'm being asked what area I'd like to specialise in.

My plan was really to work my way through clinical placements before making any definite decisions, but my interest lies in working towards becoming a child health nurse. I can't seem to find any info though, do you need to become a midwife before a MCHN? or any other postgrad studies? I have searched and can't find any info. UQ does seem to offer one very short postgrad cert in CHN and that's all I can find

Hey Saleo,
Are you going for the Child health nurse or intending to work as a nurse in a hospital (Children's ward, maternity ward)? I'm not so sure about the child health nurse. As a nurse in children or maternity ward, there are no requirements. Try your luck with the new grad position. Just to forewarn that the competition to enter those wards are fierce, just get yourself mentally prepared.
I searched the net for Child and Family Health Nursing and apparently there are these 2 university offering it. Though there are no strict requirements, but there is a 'good to have' requirement of at least 1 year in maternity or 2 years in nursing...

*I'm not heading into that pathway, hence I can't offer much advice. But try asking the nurses or email the nurses who are working as one. Pretty sure they will be more than happy to point you in the right direction. ^_^

Thanks seraphim. I mean child health nursing, in a community nursing setting rather than a hospital. i had heard that paediatric grad positions were really difficult to come by.

ill check out those courses you listed, id only looked at courses in qld although if they're online i might be able to eventually able complete them that way. Thanks!

Hey Morgancooper,
Sorry if my post seems to imply that there are only 2 universities offering it. It was just meant to be 2 samples university that offered the course and their requirement. There are 100% more universities other than those 2 I have listed.
