Hi Vivi,

I attended an interview at St V's last week. Actually don't worry, it's fun and more of a get together with other new grads. Everyone is very friendly.

First there is a group exercise which is a laugh; they want to see how well you work in a team and support your team members. Easy, be very supportive and give praise appropriately. Smile and laugh a lot!

Then while you are waiting to be called in to a 1 - 2 interview, there is afternoon tea which is yummy.

The interview is simple: Why do you want to come to St V's to do your grad year? Well, it's a large teaching hospital with an excellent international reputation, it's a public hospital and I really belief in the public health system etc etc., I attended the grad info night and was really impressed with the support that is offered to grad.nurses etc etc. Everyone seems very friendly and it made me want to come here where I feel I'll get the support I want.

What can you offer us? Well I really love nursing and enjoyed my course at ...... and simply adored all my clinical placements. I feel I can help people who are ill and facing great difficulty in their lives.. I'm very patient and a good listener, I'm compassionate, caring and empathetic. I work well in a team. Then, mention experience you might have in either nursing or part time job.

Then you'll be asked 3 or 4 very simple clinical questions. Example, what would you do if you came on shift and found a patient with the IV running too quickly. That sort of thing. This takes about 10 minutes at the most.

So, I hope I've given you some idea. Good luck and just enjoy the experience.

I'd love to know how you get on?

Cheers.

WM

Hi Vivi,

You don't need to take anything with you, just yourself.

I wasn't able to attend the grad info night but got all the information I needed from the GNP page on their website. Actually, I don't think I was asked if I did attend the info session, but if I'd been asked I would have told a little white lie and said yes. There is no way those interviewing you know one way or the other. If you want to be strictly honest, say that you had planned to come, but you were ill at the time and so felt quite disappointed at that.

If you want to know more about the program, at the end of the interview you have the opportunity to ask as many questions as you like. For example, I asked about the structure of the program ( the first week is orientation and familiarisation and some revision of skills apparently). Then you spend time with your preceptor and follow her around for about a week, and finally you are set free on a ward to ......... do beautifully. Your preceptor is your main support and mentor but there are plenty of other staff who are there to help also. From what I could gather after speaking to a couple of nurses who are doing their GNP there, it's a great place to do your GNP and the staff are very supportive. They are both staying on after they finish in January. I must say, the whole hospital has a good feel about it.

When is your interview as I thought they finished last week.

Cheers,

WM

Hi Vivi,

At my Uni we were told that it's around 80% plus. Apparently last year there were quite a few unfilled places left after the match and students were ringing around to try to get in that way. I know for sure that the Royal Melbourne was one that had places left. But not St. V's. Probably seen as a 'better' place to do your GNP, but I would be happy going to RM if I don't get in at my other preferences.

What other hospitals have you applied for?

Cheers,

WM
