Hi, I was wondering if any one can assist me with my enquiry. I am about to finish my 1 year Graduate Nurse role in post op surgical ward in Brisbane. I am thinking about joining a nursing agency and doing some shifts in aged care. Though I have never worked in an aged care facility as an RN. I wanted to know what the job role and duties are when working say on all different types of shifts? I look forward to your assistance.
Thanks

Hey Crazy
Aged Care RN's have a kind of different role to a Acute Care RN. They tend to do a lot more wound care, and also RCS documentation is a big part in a Aged Care RN's shift. In Nursing Homes generaslly on a afternoon and night duty they are paid a In Charge rate, and if there is a hostel attached then generally have the responsibility for the care in there as well, which are generally supervised on shift by a PCA and or EN.
There is a lot more pallitive care in aged care. I tend to belive that you develop a feeling of making a difference a lot of the time in aged care, as your patients are not patients anymore, they are residents, and they are long term residents of a facility. So you are helping them more to maintain their independance.
Hope this helps a bit
Aaron

Hello Crazycat ! I guess KingAaron answered your question quicker then I did and he answered it well, just what they do at my working place but AM shift does the wound care mainly and PM shift does the medications. Are you interested working in Aged Care? I work South East of Brisbane.

Hi Molly
Thanks for your message and also to King Aaron. I guess considering the idea of Aged Care Nursing is a possibility, however I am not quite sure if now. As I am am awaiting my Canadian Visa and then going. However, in saying that if I shall return I will be considering that option of working in an aged care facility on a casual basis, where I would like to give holistic care and try and put a smile on their dial :) in giving them respect. That to me is a nice side of nursing. Also, my other areas of nursing interest is Community Care Nursing and Rehab Nursing. So when I return, they will be something I like to achieve in doing in my nursing.
Thanks for the tips and advice. All the best.
Molly I too live in the SE Brisbane :)

Hi All,
Just wanted to get those of you who have done agency work, to share a story or two. It does not have to be a happy ending, but something that stands out whether it be good or bad about agency, a facilitiy that you did a booking at, or even staff that you have worked with.
Ive done agency most of my career, with a stink here and there being employed in a facility and now work in Nursing Allocations for a Nursing Agency.
Looking forward to hearing your responces,
Aaron
