What do you think the term 'meaningful activities' means when you are caring for someone with dementia? Do you think you provide meaningful activities at your facility? I would LOVE to hear about the meaningful activities you have been involved in or have heard about.

creating memory books. they are like a scrapbook with photos and articles about themselves and their family. so if they were a nuse it might have a photo of the hospital where they worked as well as milestones in their lives and pictures of their children and where they grew up and any pets with notes beside them. use it as a starting point for a conversation with them, remincising.

I have seen the "Top 5 programme" used with some great success

basically you ask the family to write a list of the top 5 things that they feel help their family member feel more comfortable that staff can use to help

for example

it may be talking about what they did for a Job

their pets

reminicing about a holiday they had been on

bringing in the persons favourite thing from home

and these are kept on the front of the persons notes so everyone that is looking after that patient knows a little about the patient as a person not just another patient with dementia and it really does help with distracting the person and getting them talking about their life at around that difficult time in the late afternoon

hope this helps

warm regards,
