Nurses not charged - Teleni

Fiji Broadcasting 9 August, 2007

Striking nurses who were taken in for questioning should be thankful that they were not charged says Police Commissioner Commodore Esala Teleni.

A team of police officers visited the Fiji Nurses Association to explain the reasons behind the questioning of several nurses who protested outside government buildings earlier this week.

Police Commissioner Commodore Esala Teleni confirmed that the visit was made this morning.

"Well first they need a permit and they need a permit to assemble in public places and they don’t have a permit so they are not allowed to assemble in public places and make it even worse picketing. I think they should just appreciate what the police stand by just interviewing them and not charging them and letting them go. I sent a team there this morning to go and explain to the nurses the situations and the actions that we took so they went there this morning talking to the nurses.

Meanwhile, FNA general secretary Kuini Lutua told Radio Australia that the nurses were warned that the law will go beyond a warning next time the nurses demonstrate in public.

“Well they warned us and they gave us warning and they say if we do it again it will not be a warning they will take it further. They wanted to interview us individually think they were looking for some things to charge us with, like who told you to go and the normal questions that they would ask those in protesting where they were forces or went there in their own accord. There were twenty of you and were you in the same room? We were in a classroom kind a thing but were questioned one to one.

Rather be an Aussie

It is sure is interesting to see how differently our very near neighbours treat industrial relations!
