Survey explains central Australia's high nurse turnover

ABC News

New research shows burnout, complaints about management and a lack of housing are key factors in a high turnover of nursing staff in central Australia.

Steven Garnet, a researcher from the Charles Darwin University, says more than 1,000 nurses and midwives responded to his survey.

Mr Garnet says Alice Springs has a turnover of about 70 per cent in nursing staff.

He says the lure of adventure is not enough to keep people in the Northern Territory.

"There's a whole lot we can do about the sort of people we recruit and then looking after them when they get here," he said.

"One of the issues that came up was housing. Having help with that would make an enormous difference.

"They're the sorts of people who'll stay on."
