Hi,

I have seen a few posts about this but thought I'd bring it up again. Not sure if it's going to be hard to get employment straight out of Tafe. There are a lot of EEN's out there that have experience so not sure if it's going to be an up hill battle. Actually I was listening to ABC News on the radio the other day and they said 1/3 of the nurse community in Australia is turning 55 in the next 3 years so they expecting a shortage in nurses due to them retiring shortly. So I have probably answered my own question really.

I've heard its much harder for graduate RNs to get a job/grad program that it is for EENs. Goodluck with your EEN course ( I read your previous post ) I start my div 2 course July 4th :)

After posting this I read the exact thing you read about it being harder for RN's. I guess maybe (and please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) hospitals and nursing homes want to employ EENs because they are cheaper to employ. Still you would think they need RN's.

As long as you are fully qiualified, know your stuff and are confident at the interview I don't think it would be too hard.

Hi littlesprocket,

I finished my course last year, and I have been looking for work on and off since January (I was away for awhile and didn't want to start a new job, so that's when I stopped looking for work). I applied for about five jobs before I went away, and now that I'm back I've applied for 3 grad programs. Most of the EN/EEN job ads I come across ask for experience, and some are quite specific (e.g. three years of acute nursing experience, 1 year aged care experience, etc).
My advice for anyone doing the diploma of nursing is to find work as a PCA, it will definitely look better on your resume and help you gain valuable skills. I don't know about everyone I went to school with, but I know that there's about 10 people that have found jobs. Some of these people are doing the degree, and some are happy to stay as ENs. Most of them had PCA experience, but a couple didn't.

I hope this helps :)

I thought I'd add to this thread as it's been some time since my last post - and I can happily say that I've been accepted into an EN grad program :) So littlesprocket, hopefully you find work shortly after you finish your course. All the best to you :)

I'm a EEN graduate 2012 however the majority of positions are in nursing homes hospitals want experience and most positions in hospitals are RN's in Melbourne anyways.
