Hi everyone, I know there have been a lot of question with regards to working as a enrolled nurse but I still would like to ask some questions and hope someone could help me :) I am thinking about starting a diploma in nursing at Chisholm Institute (Melbourne) as I really can't afford to go back to uni due to time and money constraint. I just completed my accounting degree last year and been looking for a job for 3 months now with no success plus I have no interest at all in accounting. So, I am thinking of going into nursing as have always been interested in healthcare but never really thought of having it as a career until now. Just want to know whether it is hard to find jobs as enrolled nurse nowadays and how do you go about looking for nursing jobs once you finished your studies and registered? I am interested in paediatric nursing as well. I am worried and do not want it to end up in the same situation as having difficulty looking for work with my accounting degree. Thanks!

Hi There, I have nearly finished my EEN course and I have a job to walk straight into, as have 7 out of 9 girls in our class. I live in country victoria, this indicates to me demand is definately there for EEN's. I will be continuing on to do my dv.1 next year to broaden my scope of practice

Hi,
I'm looking into doing the Enrolled Nursing course through Chisholm next year and was thinking the same thing in regards to job avail in not just Vic but also other states as well.
I come from an admin background and have been out of the work scene for just over three years to have my kids (currently preg with third bub) and I knew as soon as I had my first I wanted to get into nursing as it's a totally different career path to sitting in front of phones all day. I have also thought about maybe doing the Allied Health Assistance course which is run through Chisholm but i'm totally sure what the job outcome is for that area.
I think i'm most scared about doing the initial test and interview to get into the course as maths is not one of my strengths and I havent done any since year 10.. so about 12 years ago.
I have no idea what the hours of the course would be part time and also the placements. There is a private college in my suburb which also does the Dp Nursing and they have it only part time but downfall is I might have to pay instead of getting the fee-help which Chisholm offers.
Ughh it's so hard to figure out what to do and I want to make sure im not wasting time on a course which may not have any job opportunities in the end, especially if in other states e.g. maybe Tassie or even QLD they have no spots open. Shaz88 when are you thinking of enrolling in the course?

I was told even today that many students actually get offered work before they finish as they are highly needed. I know this was the case when I was at uni 8 years ago too.

Hi newbie27, I am in the same boat as you. I don't want to waste time and money doing a course if in the end I still couldn't get a job as I did with my accounting degree. That's why i join this forum hoping to get advice from enrolled nurse as well as student nurse :) The application for the diploma of nursing at chisholm Berwick for 2013 opens in August. So, I am gonna continue looking for work while waiting until August to apply then :)

Hi Shazz, i was working as a cleaner ( externally contracted)in an Aged Care Facilty while i have been doing my EEN course part time. The facility offered me PCA work, and are extremely keen to retain me as an EEN & beyond, supportive of my desire for further training. I enjoy working there, the staff are great and the residents have a real community spirit with each other which is heart warming, i like making a difference and feel it can be challenging but also a priveledge to care for them at the end of their lives.

Don't stress about the maths, it is nothing above what you would have learned in primary or early highschool. I wasn't confident with maths but was relieved to see the kind of maths that would be used was for the most part things I remembered from school...just refreshing my understanding of fractions etc and the maths rules (what to do when in which situation). To help me with this before I enrol (planning to start my Diploma of Nursing fulltime next year through TAFE) I have bought and started working through the book "How To Master Nursing Calculations - Australia and New Zealand" as well as saving a copy of the sample Charles Sturt Uni nursing maths entry exam and the stuff on it wasn't scary at all, and that is coming from someone who for her whole life has been terrified of maths. But now I have more drive to really work at it and practice to become confident with it along with the anatomy & physiology side of things (bought a textbook called Anatomy & Physiology Made Incredibly Easy with the calculations textbook online from www.fishpond.com.au) before I attempt to actually start my Diploma. So going to spend this year working through those two textbooks and hopefully I remember most of it as I really do not want to fail when I actually start =/ I have heard there's often nursing shortages so I am sure you wouldn't have too many dramas finding work.

Hi, I am just about finished my EN/EEN and I too will have a job as soon as I am registered along with the majority of my class. On my first placement I was offered a position as an AIN and have been working as an AIN since but once I am registered I will be set.......... So i think clinical placements play a big role in getting job offers!!!! Are there scholarships for the EN/EEN course in Melbourne? In NSW we don't pay for the course it's either through the government and tafe or tafe and a private hospital group depending on who you apply through. The whole class then does not pay for the course which for was great as I would not have been able to do otherwise.

I'm in Melbourne and finished my Enrolled Nursing course a couple of months ago. I have not found it easy at all to get a job. It seems impossible to get a job in a hospital and even aged care facilities want experience. I have joined an agency but it's not what I had in mind. The only ones in my class who have got jobs were the ones who were already working in aged care facilities and their employers have now taken them on as nurses. I know none of them have got work in hospitals. I have not even seen many jobs advertised for EN's in hospitals and the adds I have seen have specified how much experience is needed. From what I've noticed, there are more vacancies in Queensland, might have to move up there lol.

Don"t give up Enigma, have you tried getting a place in a graduate program for EN's? Not sure what state you''re living in but I know in Melbourne several Hospitals, usually the private ones offer grad programs. I was lucky enough to get into one and would highly recommend it. I also know of some girls gaining positions in local super clinics another great way to get some acute experience. I hope something will come your way soon x

Hi Megan08, You mentioned about grad programs for EN. Do you know which hospitals offer these grad programs? because it seems that most hospitals only offer grad program for Div1 graduate nurse. Thanks!

Hey Shaz88, I'm doing my grad program at Cabrini Malvern, started in August last year. Ramsay Health offer EN grad programs as do St Vincents and Epworth. Ramsay Health in particular has a lot of hospitals spread across Melbourne and the Peninsula. Cabrini was the first program I applied for and the first interview I went to so I was so lucky to get into there straight away, however I did apply for the other hospitals as well. A great place to get info on grad programs is the nurses expo, that's where I heard about Cabrini's program. Hope this helps. Megan

Just to update, I found a job right after posting 3 years ago. I had no trouble getting another job a year later. Both jobs are in aged care.
