I was told today that within 3 years of completing our Div 2 training we must become medication endorsed otherwise we will be de-registered.

Has anyone else heard this? I had never heard it before and wonder whether it is true. I can understand that we may not be able to get as many job opportunities without it, but being forced to do it surely isnt right either??

I have emailed the NBV and am just waiting to see what they say. I just wanted to come here and ask if anyone else has heard that.

I asked some of my uni teachers today (one being the medications lecturer) and they had never heard of it.

I think you have done the right thing. The NBV should be able to give you that answer. And if the lecturers don't know about it...

Hello keeshy ! Are you talking about EN's ? to be mandatory medication endorsed ? If it is for EN's as I am talking about Queensland, it is a great plus to become endorsed medication for EN's.

Molly - yes I am talking about EN's. Yes I do agree being an endorsed EN is a good thing and I do intend to do the endorsement myself. I was just curious to know if it was fact that it was mandatory now.

I will let you know what the NBV says!!

Hi Peoples,

I have heard around the ridges that EEN will have more responsibility in the future (in Qld that is) it could be like that elsewhere. I am assuming that if this is the case, then RN 's will probably have more time to do their paperwork, paperwork, paperwork.

Keeshy, I havent heard it in that context but I do think that eventually all Div 2's will be medication endorsed. they are already starting the Dert IV course with medication in it (called a Diploma). They are also amalgamating all the nurses boards together to make it a national nurses board so to say.

Hi there RC here,

In queensland it is called Diploma of Nursing(Pre-Enrolment) if you want to become an EEN. The course is 18months long and includes Administer and Monitor medication in the work environment - 1) Identify situations that pose a potential risk to the safe administratiion of medications 2) Prepare medications for administratiions to clients within a variety of settings. 3) Administer medications within legal parameters. 4) Monitor peripheral intrvenous therapy. 5) monitor client response to administed medication. I got this information from my course guide for the Diploma.

Thanks guys,

Yes I knew the Cert course was changing into the diploma. I have actually seen all the new course outlines for next years students (lucky buggers hehe). The get meds and venepuncture etc.

I know that eventually all div 2's will become med endorsed (if they want a job anyway). I was just concerned it was mandatory within the 3 years (which is a bit harsh).

I personally will either go on to Div 1 or med endorsement anyway. I still havent heard from the nurses board yet so waiting to see what they say.

I might have to email them again soon.

Ok so I have the facts from the NBV.

It is in fact a terrible rumour and they are not impressed that it is out there. They thanked me for contacting them and they gave me some info.

Firstly the will NOT deregister any Div 2's for not completing their medical endorsement. They said deregistering is rare and only for extreme cases (which I knew and why I thought this whole situation was bizarre).

They will be phasing out the med endorsement course as it stands at the moment and is unsure at this stage what will be happening at the end of 2008 but recommends keeping an eye out on the NBV to see whats happening.

Phew!!! Thats a relief :- )
