Hi, I'm 52 and considering going into Nursing, would start EN see how things went then maybe consider extending study for RN.. However,, I've been reading on line how many graduates are unemployed. Is this true.. Would it be a big mistake as a mature person to start Nursing? I'm a carer and really suited to the work and have been excited about my decision to go onto Nursing, but now after reading online that so many graduate and don't find work, naturally I'm concerned. Any thoughts? Patricia-KIM

Hi Patricia, I have just completed my EN course and received my registration, and like you this is a completely new career at age 51. In my course, there were 8 others in the "mature" age bracket, and I can tell you every one of them has been offered a job since we finished. We were all offered jobs at the hospital we did our pracs at and that was down to simply working hard during our pracs and trying to be an asset to the ward. If you go in with the attitude of "what can I do to help while I am here", people notice and it definitely counts in your favour when you have finished the course and are job hunting. When I completed my studies, two of the wards I had done pracs on offered me jobs. A good attitude and work ethic is no guarantee, but will count for a lot. Good Luck

Thanks Darcy 050

given me a bit more confidence, I'm a hard worker and more than often go the extra mile. Are you thinking about going on to be a RN? Did you have cert 111 before you started your EN, reading the course info it says it's an advantage to been offered a place. I will talk with tafe. Also talk with the universities, and the Nurses board. Thanks again.

I am so glad I came across this. Im 30 and I have been going back and forth about nursing for the last 2 years thinking "im too old"  then "jobs are hard to get" . If had done it them Id be in my final year now! Seeing your stories has really inspired me. So thanks a lot.

Did you have any other experience in nursing besides what you do in placements? Does this make a difference?

I am mature age (47) and was offered a position in a grad program a week after I got my registration.  It was at the hospital where I did my pracs.  As the others have said - work hard on your pracs.  This is where you get noticed.

Hope this helps

Hi Ladies,

Which state do you base? Has anyone heard about the Institute of Health and Nursing in Heidelberg. I've been thinking to enrol into nursing. I'm not sure w/c one is the best Institute to study in Victoria.
