Hi Jules,

You're lucky that you get to use that edition! My mum bought a whole heap of nursing textbooks at a garage sale for me before I started the course, and the book you're looking for is one of them. The one we use at school is a new edition by Kozier and Erb, and it's also called Fundamentals of Nursing. It has pretty much exactly the same content, but the chapters are different and I think there may be different review questions. SO ANNOYING!

I'm not sure what edition mine is, I had a quick look and couldn't find any info. It is also missing the CD that it's meant to come with. If you don't have any luck finding it second-hand, let me know... I'll be reluctantly buying the Kozier and Erb one.

Another option is JR Medical. They have about 15% off RRP. You can order online, or go to their store in Reservoir. http://www.medicalbooks.com.au/index.htm <---- their website.

How are you liking the course so far? I've been doing it for a month now and I'm really enjoying it. It's so interesting, I can't wait for placement. :)

Hope that helps, if you're after any new books I'd definitely reccommend JR Medical. Much cheaper than university bookshops!

Holly :)

hi Holly,
am glad to hear your enjoying your course so far. wow your already a month in?!? we just started on Monday so still brand new. but so far so good.. the teachers seem great so far- interesting and funny which makes a HUGE difference as far as im concerned!

i will definitely get back to you about that book! thats sweet of your mum to have bought books for you before you started. the one im after has a green cover- i actually have the edition before it from years back which has a blue cover, the green cover is 2008 and the blue cover is 2001 which i really think is going to be too out of date to try using. it means that although the info will generally be the same, when lecturers reference pages etc, it will mean flicking back and forth trying to find the right pages... which is painful.

let me know if you have the green covered edition, and if so, how much would you sell it for?

thanks for that website by the way, ive also been looking at Textbook exchange which may prove helpful for all the other texts i need. just need to sit down and have a good look.

thanks for all the info!

Hi Jules,

I've also got the book with the blue cover. Oh well! :)

The one we have to buy is split into two or three books I think. I've been referring to the one I have, and it's still been useful. The other books my mum bought weren't on the booklist (except Mosby's Medical Dictionary), but I've used them for homework too which has been good. I guess it just helps to have as many resources as you possibly can.

It's great that you like your teachers. I think their attitude really makes a huge difference. You can always spot the teachers who hate their jobs lol. The five teachers we've had so far (I think we might have some different ones next semester) have been really lovely. And funny too! I really didn't expect it. I thought everyone was going to be serious. It makes sense though, nursing can be pretty grim and you need to be able to do your job and not get emotionally involved... which is what I'm hoping I'll be able to do!

Hi everyone, i know I might be going out of context here but I find that one can generally get away with any book with roughly the same "title" and objective/focus so long as it is of a relatively new print. I got tired of buying new books and decided to not to get any books last year!! What I did was borrow books that are on the same theme...surgical nursing, mental health nursing and so on. Just read the chapters that covers the subject currently on lecture and more often than not, you will find that you have not deviated much from the main prescribe text. I found that it suited me and maybe this might work for you too.

Perry and potter's great but i seldom refer to it or at least did not refer to it as much as I should...lol. All the best to everyone..HM and Jules

So, does that mean the blue book from 2001 is ok? I can't see us referencing much out of this book, as the basic information it covers doesn't seem to be of the kind that changes a lot over a few years. Wouldn't any things that really have changed be fully explained when we get as far as Lewis' Medical-Surgical Nursing? I'm not going to buy the new edition of Potter&Perry. Does anyone know anything to the contrary of my reasoning about this?

thanks folks! ive managed to find someone on campus who has the edition im after secondhand.

Sra, ive also got the 2001 edition of this book- but im not all that keen to use it. maybe its just me, but i cant be bothered flicking back and forth trying to find relevant pages when we're given specific pages etc to read over. I know what Schitzo is saying too about them being similar, but my personal preference is to have the right book. plus i figure a book thats now 9 yrs old perhaps isnt such a good idea, different if it was 1-5 yrs, but for me 9 yrs is a bit too old. just a personal choice- but if your happy to use it then thats your personal choice.

thanks for everyones input!
