Michael, We have worked 10 hour night shifts for ages now, it seems to work. Would like to know more about why you started them, what your old shifts were and you mention that you like the time off between late and early shifts, how does your roster work? we still have shifts that finish at 2200 and you can be back again at 0700 next morning!  Not much of a gap for resting. I would like to hear how other rosters work to get away from the quick turn around.

Cheers

Neil

NeilIn SA we have only just won the ability to have 10 hour night shifts in the the last EB agreement. The L shifts finish at 2300 and start again at 0700. In Ceduna our shifts used to finish at 2245 and back at 0645 with the night shift starting at 2230. This only gave us 15 minutes to hand over and we were usually late finishing ie after 2300.To cut a long story short we were ending up with less than 8 hours between shifts and still had travelling time from home on top of that. If we were late leaving sometimes we only had 6-7 hours between shifts which really sucked. Now we start nights at 2130 and finish at 0700. A late shift finishes at 2200 and an E starts at 0700. It has also given us a 2 hour overlap in the afternoon for inservices etc.So we now have 30 mins to hand over and 9 hours between shifts. It sounds like SA has only just caught up to you guys in BalmainThe reason I was interested is I think that there is alot of resistance to change in other large metro hospitals and was keen to find out if any hospitals in Adelaide have adopted the change yet.A bonus of living in the country is that I can be home within 1-2 mins of knocking off.Cheers Michael

I have just started the new 10 hr ND and so far so good, Late shifts start at 1330 and finish at 2200 early shifts havent changed 0700 to 1530 and ND 2100 to 0715. Afternoon bedside handovers have also been introduced and its a big change for a small country hospital. Handover in the morning is still rushed but the afternoon overlap allows for showering of heavy long term patients and insevices etc. Whats the deal with 10 hr ND paid/unpaid breaks?? any one know?

I think 10 hour night shifts are a good thing.  Where I am currently working they only recently change to starting afternoon and night shift one hour earlier.  One hour makes a lot of difference in the late-early workers! The trouble is because nights start at 9.30 and evenings finsih at 10.00 and handover is supposed to be given at this time, when do we get a chance to right up notes and settle patients for bed as most would be done at this time?  Any suggestions??

Here in North Queensland, the 10hr night shift is only used in some areas. But we do have our 10hr break between shifts which means if you work until 2230 or 2300 then you don't start your next shift until 0830 or 0900 (instead of 0700). The down side of this is that they try not to roster such shifts, therefore you end up with a late before days off and come back to an early. But I think it is worth it to have the break. One area that does utilise the 10hr night shift, has their shifts set up like this: 0700 - 1530 Early 1300 - 2130 Late 2100- 0730 Night Obviously that also allows for the 30min unpaid meal break. Friends I have which work in these areas say they love finishing a late shift at 2130 rather than 2330 - especially if they are starting again in the morning. Personally, I would love to see it happen in the area I work in too.

We have always done 10 hour nights and I love the fact that you only have to do 4 to get your up for the week, therefore more time off. (And yes I am one of those horrible people who has no trouble sleeping when on nights).

Here in the US most nurses work 3 12 hour shifts. I will admit by the end of my 3rd shift I am a bit tired but having the next 4 days off more than makes up for it.

When I was working in the OR I worked 8 hour shifts 5 days a week. Since I had to take late days and call it seemed like I never had time for myself or to spend with my family.

I have only ever worked 10hr nights. They are good, because they give you a cross over period during the day, so that more time can be spent on major dressings etc. 10 hour nights mean you get an extra day off as you have already worked your 40hrs, for the week.

I wouldnt mind doing 10hr night duties, as long as you get something to do in those hours. I know the Royal Brisbane Childrens were just starting the 10hr shifts last year, but you could still do 8hrs if you wanted.

In my nursing home: hours are generally 6.30 till either 1.30, 2.30 or 3, afternnons are either 14.30-2130 or 2230 and night duty is 2230 to 0700.

I did most of my pracs at Royal Brisbane and for those doing an evening and then morning, most come on at 1230 and leave at 2130 rather than doing a 1430-2300. Night duty come on at 2230 and leave at 0730
