Hi, I am in Brisbane and just wanting to know the proceedure for entering nursing, either RN or EN, it is something I have never done before but it is time for a new career move!

I am 45 and need a change, as a child I was always going to be a nurse but ventured into administration instead.

Can anyone advise the best way to go and also who to contact, and or what qualifications I will need to enter this profession.

Cheers

Hi Keewee, I have nearly finished my first year studying to be an EEN, which is a medically endorsed enrolled nurse. I am studying through polytechnic in tasmania (formally Tafe). The course runs for 2 years part time here, 2 days per week, so I still have time for work and kids etc! If you are in Brisbane i'm not sure if they are called en's or div 2 rn's as it varies from state to state.

Once I have completed the course and work full time for 6 months it qualifies us to do registered nursing at uni over 2 years instead of 3 years. Your best bet would be to contact your local tafe or uni and they should be able to send you out some sort of information pack with course length. costs and starting dates etc.

Not sure about up there, but down here it is quite competitive to get into...there were 16 places in my group and about 100 people applied.
Don't be put of that you are coming from a different career path either, I've worked in retail for the last 16 years and have absolultey NO experience in health. Hope this makes sense to you and is a little bit helpful.. Sharelle

Hi Keewee,

I believe that the EN course is a two year TAFE degree, and the RN course is a 4 year uni degree. The Qld Nursing Council site has a great resource page listing pre-registration university courses and pre-enrolment TAFE courses at http://www.qnc.qld.gov.au/index.php?id=7 If that link doesn't work, go to the main QNC page and click on Nursing and Midwivery education on the menu on the left.

I studied as a mature-age student, and although it is tough when you have concerns such as paying the mortgage, putting food on the table etc, it is well worth it in the end. You just have to remember to keep slogging away at it!

A great way to get info on getting into nursing is to look out for Nursing Expo's being held in your state, keep an eye on places such as the Royal College of Nursing, they run these Expo's quite often and have an Expo link on their site they put together heaps of info and people to talk to about getting into a career in nursing.

IN FACT THERE IS ONE ON TODAY IN BRISBANE !!!!! if you get this in time !!!
