Hi,

I may be looking at doing some nurse bank work as an EN and wondered if someone can tell me how often you need to advise of your availabilities (weekly, fortnightly etc), how much work you have been getting, if you get a casual rate of pay (or other) and how much notice you usually get before a shift.

Thanks

Hi,
I currently am in nurse bank at 2 different hospitals in the same area health service and once hosp I give my roster for the month and the other I ring each week to tell what shift i can work the following week. Usually you find out on the spot that you're working that shift (only sometimes get cancelled), but I never know which ward I'll be on till i get there.

I found that at first I didn't get a lot of work because they try and get reports back from NUMs to see how you are. It took about a month to get known around each hospital and now I work every shift I put down, as you'll find certain wards will request to have you. In my area service I can work a max of 38hrs a week, don't know if that's across the board though. Only occassionally they'll ring up last minute to call you in if you're available.

I earn 10% loading for being casual and then your usual shift and weekend loadings on top. I know a few friends that work agency and although they're hourly rate is a bit more, they don't get nowhere near the amount of work as me because hospitals consider agency staff expensive. It's usual public award hourly rate that I'm paid. In a nutshell, go nurse bank, not agency if you want lots of work, that's what I've found.
