Hi, I'm new to this forum so I apologise if this topic has already been discussed.

I'm very interested in studying a Bachelor of Nursing but due to being a single parent and working full time my only option would be to study via correspondence, and probably part time.

I'm just wondering if anyone in Sydney (or NSW) has studied through any of the various places offering distance education in nursing. If so which university are you with and how do you find it? How are practical assessments done and do you have to travel far?

Looking forward to hearing from you :) - Katie

I started at CDU and was with them for 2 years before transferring to CSU. With CDU I had to go to Alice Springs for 2 x 1 week blocks of teaching and did one 3 week prac at a nursing home close to where I live.

For CSU I have had to go on campus each semester (Bathurst & Wagga Wagga). The length depends on the length of each res school I have completed. I have also had 4 to 6 weeks prac each semester. They are generally in 2 week blocks. 2 x 2 week blocks have been away from home, with another 2 week block on the central coast in November. 4 of the 2 week blocks have been close to home. The location of the pracs generally depends on what the uni has available that semester.

Hi Angela and Katie Ann

I am also considering B.Nursing by distance and am a single mum - so logistics are key :)

Do you mind if I ask, Angela, why you swapped Institutions?

Also at CSU can you request a location you would prefer for pracs?  Or is it a pure ballot style system?

Thanks :)

Hi Angela,

With CDU did you have to study full time on campus for a year propr to be able to do distance education? How are you finding the course?

Hi Rachana,

I've been looking into this alot and found a great course with CQU. I've read alot of their information and spoken to their staff about doing the nursing curse via DE part time. They have advised that for one or two days per term we would have to go to one of their campuses (in QLD) for specific lectures.  I've looked that up and sometimes you can go on a Saturday which is great because I work.

When I spoke to them about pracs they try and get you to go local and country, so for me because I live in Liverpool she said I can try and get in to Liverpool hospital for the majority of the pracs and then for country I would probably have to go further out. The prac length is outlined in course info below.

I've applied to start next year, perhaps if you do also we can help each other :)

In a nutshell, I had a falling out with some of the staff over the general disorganised "feeling" of the degree. I NEED to be able to plan things, CSU has residential schools and placement blocks planned 12 months in advance and posted online for everyone to view. On the otherhand CDU have to rely on getting approved for ad-hoc requests for student placements and sometimes, you dont get much notice at all. If you want to PM me, I can go into more detail.

With CSU, as a DE student, you have the option of organising your own placement at a private facility OR wait for the start of semester and see what the uni offers for each block. The exceptions I have come accross are: they dont allow a SIPP (Student initial practium placement) for placement for NRS294 and they will not allow you to go to a Ramsay owned hospital (they are too expensive). So whilst they publish the blocks for placement in September/October for the following year, you dont get a preference sheet to know exactly where the placements (in public facilities) are until 2 weeks before semester generally. It is much better organised. If there is a specific public facility you wish to go to for a placement, you can ask them and they will try and organise it.

CDU allows enrollment from the start of the degree as a DE student. This is what I did.

I am now finished for the year (except for my placement) and only have 2 units left in semester 1, 2013. Cant wait to have it all finished!

Good Luck.
