Hi, i am on my very first placement, and it's in a residential aged care facility. It's a brand new experience for me and i am finding it hard to control my emotions. I don't mind the work itself, but I just feel so sad about the residents and how cruel old age is. How can i get a grip?! I think i care too much!

I honestly think that you will make a good nurse, just need to learn how to draw the line.

Feeling for your the patients is a good thing, as you tend to display more empathy and patience towards them. However, thinking and sharing too much of their troubles can also break your moral to work and think properly. Hence you need to learn how to draw the 'professional boundaries'. Distance yourself too much and you find yourself alienating the patient who needed your care and expertises. (That is also when the 'bad' nurses come about.)

In order to stay in the healthcare profession, you need to know when to distant yourself and not let it affect you. And remember, don't bring it home!! At the same time, remember your duty of care and do what is needed to be done. It is very subjective on when to draw the line, as the amount of issues we can handle differs.

I normally relax during rest day, such as staring into the sea and feel the sea breeze. Some serenity and quietness help me too. (Such as meditation) Many of my friends signed up for dancing classes and they states that it helps them take their minds off work. Just do anything that helps take your mind off work.
