Ive recently been registered as an enrolled nurse after working as a personal carer for 5 years. My workplace has informed me that i need to leave my job now i have a higher qualification. i've always thought i would still be able to work as a PCA and be on PCA wages even when i have a certificate in nursing. Does anyone know if i can work as one?

thanks

No,you will not be able to work as a PCA any more. It is part of the law to prevent exploitation of health care professionals. Registered nurses are not allowed to work as a EN even if they were once hold the EN registration. (Like upgrading themselves to RN)

It also helps when lawsuits take place. (touch wood) Eg. a PCA who holds a en/rn certificate made a mistake like failing to interpret the BP of a patient and lead to complications. In this case, should the PCA be held responsible as a PCA/EN/RN?
In short, you are forced to look for a job as an EN somewhere else...
