Hi everyone. I am most likely considering starting my diploma in nursing in July. I am now torn between whether to go through TAFE (Loganlea campus, South Brisbane) or Mater Education (Brisbane). They are both a diploma in nursing, Loganlea is closer to home though. Both are 18 months full time, however Mater is $15,000 and TAFE is $9,000. Has anyone got any opinions on this whether they are good/bad?? ANY recommendations would be greatly appreciated, as I am just stuck at the moment with what to do.

Also, upon my enquiries to both these places they have advised me that in Brisbane the Diploma of Nursing is what you need to do to become an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse, which is simply called an Enrolled Nurse now, is this right? It seems correct from what research I've done, but I just was wondering about other people thoughts are on this?

Also, what is the job availability in Brisbane for endorsed enrolled (which I guess is what I'll be once finishing a Diploma in Nursing)? Are there any other guys/girls that have recently finished their studies in a diploma of nursing in Brisbane? Have you found employment within your fields?

Any comments would be appreciated :-)

Thanks guys!

In Vic, there is government funding for Nursing courses and mine was only $2500 instead of $12000. I've heard the funding has increased this year. Look into private providers and ask about government funding.

Hi S-09
I finished my 18 month full time EN course through tafe in December 11. I went to Bremer tafe in Ipswich, and they were pretty good. The placements were varied from mental health, surgical, medical, rural, day hospital and indigenous. I think, if anything, that would be a definite bonus doing your diploma through tafe, as you will get a broader range of experience. I dont know much about mater, so cannot say anything either way about their course.

You are correct in your research, we are called Endorsed Nurses now as the diplomas (In QLD anyhow) cover medication administration, so you finish with the medication endorsement regardless if you do Mater or Tafe.

As I mentioned, I finished in early December, and my registration came through pretty quick considering it was Christmas (officially registered from 29th Dec). In saying that, I have applied for around 15 jobs thus far, with no luck until this week. I applied for the jobs on the net (Seek, Indeed etc) and only heard back from one. I then personally delivered my resumes to a few places and have managed to score PT work (Im currently at uni finishing RN's). So, in saying that, it has been quite difficult to find employment, as 99% of places want post grad experience. Go figure that one! How do we get post grad experience if no one is willing to give us a job!

(Ramsey health do offer grad programs twice a year, which is good if you can get into it. )

I am glad that I did the course, it was tough but worth it. Good luck in your studies!
