Hi. I am a med endorsed div 2 nurse (EEN I think in other states) and just wondering where the div 2 role is going. When I did my training a few years ago there was talk that a div 1 RN would become more of a supervisor/managerial role and the div 2 would do the hands on work. I am aware that we can do further training to be able to administer via IV route.
I wondering about things like catheterisation, nasogastric intubation, blood collection and that sort of thing.
I always thought I would go on and do Div 1, but now with a young baby, I am thinking that if the div 2 role is expanding so much, maybe I will remain a div 2.
Any thoughts?

hi,

im doing the Div 2 course in melbourne this year & will be finished in November. We are being taught catheterisation, NGT and taking bloods...everything youve mentioned.....so all of these things are now part of the Div 2 /EEN role (given that you are qualified to do so of course). the only thing that isnt included in my course is IV's. but you can do it as an add on, which im intending to do hopefully next year.

i had clinicals recently and while out in a hospital was pleased to see that i honestly couldnt tell at ward level who was the Div 1 and who was the Div 2. on this ward all the Div 2's were med endorsed so there was really no distinguishable difference. which is really exciting for Div 2's now. We are also being told that the Div 1 role is headed into a more managerial paperwork/administration type role- but im guessing this is not something that will happen quickly. to be honest, i think the biggest difference is going to end up being that Div 1's will get paid more money to do the same job that a Div 2 can do....and for me that will probably lead me into doing the Conversion course and doing the extra 2 years to be a Div 1. I know that its not all about money, (and you'd be silly if you went into a career like nursing based on money!) but at the end of the day we all have to pay the bills and i can see that it will become very frustrating knowing that the person standing next to you in handover is earning more money than you for doing the exact same job.

so i guess it'll be a personal thing deciding whether to do the Div 1 course or remaining a Div 2, theres valid reasons for both. but certainly if you remain a Div 2 theres lots of interesting and stimulating work available.

Thanks for your response Jules.

That is great that the role is expanding so much. I agree, it will come down to doing the same job as a div 1 but earning less. That is pretty much what I do at the moment in aged care, but i don't mind at this stage lol.

All the best with your studies : )
