Hi. I am really wanting to kick start a career in Nursing, one day leading to work in Oncology. However I live in a remote WA town with no access to a TAFE or Uni Centre that I can attend for classes. They don't even offer anything I can study online to get a foot in. Has anyone been in my situation and found away to study? I know the nurses here at our hospital study via distance but am yet to find out through who. I am looking at starting study next year. I have not studied in this area before so I was even wanting to do the Cert IV prep but I have been knocked back from everywhere as you need to be able to attend classes. I'm really deflated and am close to giving up. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

Hi Kbay,

I also lived remote in WA for some time, in Paraburdoo. I was accepted through Edith Cowen Uni in Perth and did some units through them externally. And at exam time I did my exams through the Tom Price Tafe.

But now I am doing my Enrolled Nursing through Pilbara Institute in South Hedland and they offer external studies for WA residents. They just took in mid year students but maybe try for Jan next year :)

Thanks so much for your reply. Yeah i want to start the study next year so that works out great. How do u go about practical assesments and placements? I know some of the people at the hospital were allowed to choose and find their own placement. You have given me some more hope now so thanks again :)

I only did 2 units so I didn't get to that stage of placements and prac. But I do know that there were only a certain few units I could do in the first year online and the rest had to be done at the uni. So my plan was to do what I could externally and then move to Perth but that didn't happen in the end.

To be accepted I sat a STAT test and that got me into ECU :)

Hi there! Im currently studying Paramedicine from Edith cowan university but due to no jobs here (in SA)  I'm switching to nursing (hopefully) and will finish paramedicine later.
Im from South Australia and our University of South Australia offers their Bachelor of nursing and midwifery course externally if your interested there too. I've applied. now the long wait begins. Good luck. :-)
