Hi there all, Ive done my cert 3 and have been working in an aged care facility for approx 2 yrs now but can anyone tell me the difference between cert 3 and cert 4? Some say its a lot of work but others say the only difference between them is level 4 has alot more detail about the reporting and documentation side of things. Any imput would be appreciated.....thankyou.

I completed my Cert 3 last year via correspondence, I found it very enjoyable, but at times difficulty, as I has never worked in a facilty until I did my placement. So I had to think of the scenerio I was in and go from there. I found there was alot of reading involved (especially the module 'Personal Care', its mostly just reading with a few assignments). For my electives I chose modules that were also in the Diploma of Nursing, so can get RPL for them (when I get in, hopefully this Semester), so it can reduce my course time.

All the best for everybody that is doing this course and just think all the questions are in the manual book.

hi kalii
i would be happy to help you out on your cert 3 . I finished it approx. 2 yrs ago and found it very interesting and didnt find it to tricky.
You really just need to use common sense when thinking about the questions to answer. Just keep in mind how u would like your grandparents to be treated .
Since finishing the course i went straight into a high care dementia wing in a facility.
Very demanding but definatly rewarding.
Just keep at it u will be fine.

Hi Aaron & Everyone,

I currently work in the home assist area and need to enrol for my cert III in aged care. I have found courses such as thomson, seek, tafe etc., etc and am unsure which one to do. Are they pretty much all the same or does anyone have any advice on which course? would really appreciate any comments or opinions b4 I enrol.

many thanks,

Christine

Christine01,
I dont know whether you have to pay for your cert3, but if you do, try getting in contact with Anglican Retirement Villages, They are community based as well as facility based. You can earn pretty good money with them and they pay for you to complete cert 3 on their time!

Hi Lisams

I also have just started the cert 3 in Aged Care course after 25 years working in an office. I am doing it from home, finding it a bit challenging, but keen to keep moving through.I have completed orientation to aged care and nearly finished provide support to an older person. Its been a long time since I studied and I have only been into an aged care facility once in my life, but from reading other peoples responses in this site its all about using common sense to answer the questions.

Hopefully we will get through this.

Hi there Am having a hard time getting started on my way thru Cert3, I must just be reading too much into the questions maybe? I know alot of it is common sense and thinking how you would like your own family members treated but Im still not really sure on how to start!! silly i know .. just answer the questions!!!

Hello ALL who are doing the marvellous move and doing Cert 3 in Aged Care.
I have worked my way up the ranks so to speak and by far, I am suited to looking after our vulnerable elderly.

I am very approachable on advise as I have 25 years of various Aged Care positions.
I am located on the Sunshine Coast.

One other post stated the advise about treating the older person like they are your own nana or grandpa. That is spot on.
A lot of the work is surely common sense too, and also don't do someone what you would not want them to do to you.
What if it is you sitting there in many many years. Be kind and be respectful.
More than anything NEVER talk down to an older person. Talk to them as you would anyone; they haven't become clueless!
In fact, they are more wise and onto us. We must ask to what name do we address them and thereafter, Never use derogatory
words eg 'lovey', 'billy willy' for some called Bill etc etc. Get me there? Never use words that belittle. There is never an excuse for
it.
GOOD LUCK to all those on courses. You are entering an area that needs a lot more caring and doting people.
Look out next year; there is a big AGED CARE CAMPAIGN beginning around Mar/April. We need more recognition for this work.

Hi everyone

Just stumbled on this site and what a great idea. I am starting my Aged Care cert 3 in less then a week and can hardly wait.Just have a question that has been on my mind about the evaluations throughout the course....Are there sit down exams as well as the rest of the assesments? Just asking because it has been nearly 8 yrs since school and would like to know what is ahead...besides that I can't wait this is something i have always wanted to do.

Great site :)

Hi Everyone...hi Brownez4

I also just stumbled on this site and I have just done my first day (Cert 3 in aged care)

This site is a wonderful find! I'm doing mine through Catholic Care (Traineeship) and I can't wait to get into the "nitty gritty"

This week we have introduction lectures/discussions and starting from next Monday we go out on the floor with a mentor for a couple of weeks.

I am SO excited because I was really hoping to be placed in the dementia unit (to work in I mean... not to live in lol)...AND I HAVE BEEN...YAYYYYY!

I'm pretty sure that the way we will be doing it is assessment based (although I'd love to sit an exam...such a challenge) but it might be different in a traineeship to doing the course combined with work placement so I can't really comment with any level of expertise.

Anyway...good luck I'm sure we'll chat again.

chez.
