Hi all, i'm looking into actually doing the Diploma EN course via distance education with the Gold Coast TAFE after talking about it for about 7 years. I've been on the website and printed out the course info, but I have a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can help me with??

They are:

1. The course is full time over 18mths - how many hours of study/course work would this be per week on average? I work full time and have two kids and am trying to work out whether I would actually have the time to devote to study.
2. With regard to the clinical placements, the course info says that participants are required to complete 80hrs after the theory units in Semester 1, 160hrs in Semester 2 and 160hrs in Semester 3. Is there a time limit as to how long you can take to complete each block of hours? For example, would I need to take 2 weeks off work in semester 1 to complete 80 hours of clinical placement, and then 3 weeks off for the following semesters? Or could I do clinical placements on a casual basis, say 10 hours per week over the semester?

Does anyone know of any other places that offer the Dip EN course via distance learning, perhaps with the option of completing it part time rather than full time? I so want to do this - i'm approaching 30 and cant stand the thought of being stuck in a horrid office job for the next 30 years of my life - i want to do something i'm passionate about! But i'm totally freaked out by the very real possiblity that I wont have the time to commit to this particular course on a full time basis, in addition to working full time.

I've investigated the Bremer TAFE and they don't seem to offer the course via distance anymore, and I can't find anything on the SA TAFE site about distance either. Doing it part time face-to-face just isn't an option as I cant take 2-3 half days off work to attend classes, and i can't find anywhere near me that offers any sort of evening or night school.

Sigh....I get so excited about finally doing this and then reality jumps up and smacks me in the face!

hi there,

i too am about to take the plunge, but right from the beginning. I am about to start Certificate IV in preparation for entry into enrolled nursing. I have to attend a full day induction on 15th feb and then as each subject finishes, the exam at the tafe, so maybe 2-3days month off work.

then, 6 months later, come this july, i will also do the Diploma - I have chosen a tafe in Perth as this is where I live, Northam tafe offer the cert IV above and the diploma by flexible/correspondence learning. The tafe is 100 klm away too! but it beats having to go to one in the city that want 3 days full time... So for now i can almost work full time still until the exams etc. With the diploma, what I was told today is as some of the subjects require tafe attendence, there is no getting out of it i am afraid. I too had to quit my full time job for this passion. I have been unemployed for nearly 4 wks but got a part time job today!

I am even selling my investment house to help pay for it. I just got offred a part time job today and can work as much as i want during the week until the diploma where tafe have said 2 days per week needs to be at Tafe. This new job is great saying i can work 3 days per week, and perhaps a sat to get extra money, and i explained about the 5 x 2 week placements or whatever needed and they said i can do it but take from my leave or unpaid. They know eventually I will leave but in the meantime I will do a good job and they will in turn help me pay for study and get to my ultimate goal...

Firstly find an employer that will agree to help you - it may be part time eventually but you are still going to be there and work for them. If they think you are a great employee, they may let you go part time to do this. What about night fill? working sat/sun instead?

secondly, get yourself into a situation where you can perhaps put money away for the times you wont get paid for placements. I also heard some people say some get paid to do the placements?

see if you can get into aged care paid employment.

lastly, if you are really passionate now like me at 34, soon to be 35 - JUST DO IT! its 18mths of hard yakka but look at the end result.....I have moved heaven and earth to make this happen and now the job and tafe are brand new things and I am soooooooooo bloody scared but like they say, WHAT SCARES YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER!

keep in touch if you like
