Hi all

I'm studying nursing at UWS. I have a prior degree, and a prior career (in advertising) but need and want a change following my daughter's birth and some health issues.

I decided on nursing with a desire to work in early childhood  / postnatal / mothercraft nursing ideally, but am also interested in research.  My first degree was in science.

I'm in my first year.  The thing is, as sole parent to a 5 yr old, shift work is completely unfeasible for me.

Is it possible to find 9-5 work (or thereabouts) from graduation??? And, does anyone know if you can move straight into research work (and if there's much of it) after graduating?

Many, many thanks for your help.

Liz

I am a sole parent with 4 young children. I work day and afternoon shifts and it is quite feasible. I drop my kids at before school care at 6.30 am and start work at 7.00 am. I get out at 3.00 in time to pick them up from school. Afternoon shifts are possible as I pay someone to mind the kids. If I was working 9-5, the only difference would be that the kids would be in after school care instead of before school care.

Thanks for your reply. I think its amazing that you achieve all that. Your children must be very resilient.

My daughter's pre school care doesn't start til 7, although I wouldn't want to drop her anywhere before 8... she's quite anxious and gets overwhelmed very easily.  Just wouldn't handle being woken up before 6 then dumped in care.

My kids quite look forward to before school care. I suppose they are resilient and that's good as I'm working and studying full time. However, I have seen quite a few jobs advertised for nurses that don't involve shift work. You could perhaps work in a clinic or day surgery centre or community nursing or the blood bank. I'm sure there are plenty of options and perhaps when your daughter is older you may be able to do some shifts.
