hi

i am thinking of studying to be a nurse and would be an under graduate student of mature age, with 3 kids age 3-6. i am thinking of starting with just one unit at a time until my little girl goes to school. is there a uni for studying nursing in brisbane by distance, if no is there anyone out there who has successfully or is studdying as distance??

i have read that there can be problems when studdying via distance at SA uni, does anyone have any recent feedback, and is 10 hours a week enough for one unit?

thanks

Hi Viki,

I am starting with CQU next month studying to be a nurse via distance education. I also have 3 kids (twins - 3, 7). You can study two modules a semester.

Let me know how you get on.

Dave

do you know if there is anywhere in brisbane you can study by distance?

Hi Vicki,

With CQU you can do your placements in Brisbane. The residential courses can be done in Noosa.

I dont think there are any clinical placements in the first year (when studied part time).

Other uni's also do distance education (CDU being one). I'm not aware of any in the Brisbane area that do distance education, but if you find one please let me know.

I guess one option is to do the distance option & then transfer to another uni in Brisbane to study on site when your ready.

Good Luck with it!

Hi Vicki,

I think you need to get the Senior first aid before doing your clinical placements. Thats probably true regarding the police check as well.

I went up to CQU for their last open day on nursing and was really impressed. I'm not sure how often they run it but keep an eye out. The open day was in Noosa. CQU also do a WIST/LIFT course which is a taster of how distance education would be and if it will work for you. It recommended 10 hours per unit for this course. however, I didn't spend that much time on either module.

I don't want to bang on about CQU other people have had equally good experiences with other uni's on this forum. The option to do the residential course in Noosa was a big plus for me.

One thing to think about is some uni's only have one intake per year. Some have mid year intakes.

Let me know how you get on.

Dave

Hi Abbeyside,

I am also interested in distance education via CQU and was just wondering how you are going?

I am in Melbourne so I am guessing I would have to do my placements in QLD???

How are you finding the study load and student support/resources?

Thanks in advance

Hi NurseyNurse,

The course is going well at the moment. I've just done my A&P and history of nursing exams. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the results.

I really enjoy the course and the delivery has been excellent. The staff have been great whenever I've needed to contact them. Like yourself I'm doing it by distance.

I'm pretty sure you can do your clinical placement in Melbourne. However, you may want to check out where you do the res schools.

So far I have nothing to complain about and really enjoy the course.

If you have any other questions just ask.

David

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I also have twins (3 year old) and a 4 year old. This sounds like a great option for me to study from home. I am actually half way through my Div 2 as well.

A few more questions (sorry)

Did you have to sit an entrance exam?

Did you have any qualifications/experience which helped you get selected for the course?

Where did you have to go for res school, and how long for?

Thanks again for your help,

Melissa

Hi Melissa,

I didn't have to sit an entrance exam. I applied through QTAC. You can also do a bridging course (LIFT/WIST) which leads into the degree course.

I've been a computer programmer for years and my degree in IT got me into the course. However, the LIFT/WIST course will also get you in. I did the LIFT course because its been so long since I studied. It was really helpful and not hard. It only took a few weeks (all by distance).

I go to Noosa for my res school as its the closest to Brisbane. You can also goto Rocky or Macay. For A&P it was a 2 day res school and really enjoyable.

If you have any more questions it's not a problem.

Dave

Hi Dave and Mellisa

I went to the Queensland unis open day on the weekend, and spoke to cq uni and they were very helpfull. I am currently studying an intro to uni unit with open uni, that is not easy at all, lift would have been a much better idea. I am going to contact CQ uni today and ask about placements, entry etc, I will let you know how I go Melissa.

Thanks for your advice earlier in the year Dave, I fianally got around to study after an overseas trip and am really enjoying it.

cheers

Vicki
