Hie there, is there anyone who will be joining Melb Uni for the Master of Nursing Science in Feb 2010 intake as an International/ Local Student. I’m actually feeling quite nervous as I’m a graduate form a Business field, and have no knowledge with regards to Nursing, but at the same time quite enthusiastic to take up the challenge. I’ll be also taking up the Human Anatomy online subject as to prepare myself for the said course (anyone who has done it pls advice on the subject).

Also, I was wondering if it’s easy for us to get a part time/casual job in this field while we r studying.

Howdy,

I'll be there! I have been an I.T. consultant for years and have an I.T. degree so it is a big change for me too.
I did the online Human Anatomy course. The work is not hard, but time management was hard at times trying to juggle with that and working 50 hour weeks as the course does need some time dedicated to it in order to get through the work.

Cheers,
Ian.

hm interesting that someone with absolutely NO nursing background can get into a Master of nursing......considering from my experience to even get in the grad cert/dip courses you need to be a registered nurse and have at least one year of post grad nursing experience....

unless the gov are now that despearate that they will take high paying students who have no experience or knowledge into a masters!!! Thats wrong if they do!

Hi rozymisty,

You are misunderstanding the MNSc degree at Melbourne. It is not the same as doing a Masters at other uni's where a qualified Nurse will do further/advanced study. The 'Melbourne Model' of teaching all degrees now follows a path of a more general degree, e.g. a general Bachelor of Science degree, rather an say a specialised BSc in a specific field, although a student may pick elective subjects which are relevent to their intended career path - i.e. somebody who wants to become a nurse might choose biology based electives. Following completition of the Bachelors degree students then go on to specialise with a Masters Degree in their chosen field.

Studying for the MNSc at Melb Uni involves packing the equivilent of a 3 year Bachelor or Nursing into 2 years by studying longer days, doing placements at the same time as studying and only getting a couple of weeks off at Christmas after year 1. At the end of the degree students are eligible to become RN's on the same level as other grads. For those of use with kids to feed this degree is particularly attractive as, despite the more intense work load, it means we get back into the work force quicker.

Hope that helps clear up any confusion :o)
