Hello. This question involves AIN or PCA work, ussually involved with having a cert 3 in aged care qualification.

I'm thinking of studying graduate entry nursing (two year course) I currently work full time in somehting not related to my first degree and thinking of the taking on the challenges of nursing. I was thinking of studying for the cert 3 in aged care qualification, as I would not mind working as a AIN around my full time university studies.

My questions....

Is it easy to get AIN work with an aged care qualification? I have researched a few job advertisements and a lot of these are asking for 12 months practical experience? Id there a shortage? Are there any agencies willing to take on people with just a cert 3 in aged care and prac experience through their placements?

Thank you for any help. Looking at doing grad entry nursing in 2011, but am considering studying cert 3 in aged care externally around my full time work, providing it will be a useful investment. Thank you for any replies.

i worked as an AIN when i was doing my BN and the agency i worked for were happy with at least 1 clinical placement experience. Im sure everywhere is different though. I was never short of work as an AIN, i was offered shifts everyday, sometimes double shifts! Working as an AIN looks great on your resume when you apply for jobs as an RN aswell. Good luck!

Easy to get a job but another thing altogether to be able to hang onto it :)

I am located in Brisbane (south) and I have found a great response to AIN positions. However, you have to go and look for them offline. The best way I've found is going in as a volunteer although there are agencies/institutions willing to employ with no experience.

Personally, I feel a Cert III should be a career changer's first port of call to see if they like it because wanting to do something and actually doing it are very different.

For example, at the place where I'm at, myself and another girl are the only ones left out of a group of 20 that were signed up. Half of those freaked out on the first day and left immediately.

As for studying with a full-time job that is not related to nursing, you are indeed up for a challenging time. While I am finding the Cert III pretty straightforward, you do have to make time for it that will interrupt normal working hours, it's something that you do really need to devote yourself to and fortunately for me I've managed to find a nursing related position that supports this. I did not see myself succeeding if I did not do this but that's me. Everyone has different ways of going about things.
