Hello...I am not sure what happens to RN/ENs who are currently taking a short break from nursing due to whatever reason. To stay registered we need "Insurance" and meet the other criteria? If I am a stay at home mum, why would I pay nursing insurance just to stay registered. If I let my rego "lapse" I am disadvantaged from applying for jobs that state must have current registration? A bit confused? Are they saying use it or lose it...forcing nurses back into nursing, who are on a break. I understand we need to keep educated etc, but this new system makes it hard for nurses who may want to return to nursing on a casual basis. If our registration lapses because we don't meet the criteria, what are our options?

in my own opinion i think every nurse needs to keep up to date with their registration & insurance even if they are having a break but intend on returning to the workforce at some stage. my main argument for this is if for some reason you become part of a legal enquiry for something that happened while you were insured in the past but not insured now...it would be pretty messy and could end up quite a costly situation if you have let your insurance lapse. i only say this because it happened to someone I know who said 'it wont happen to me'.

as for the 'use it or lose it' i dont think this a ploy to keep nurses....nursing is constantly evolving and all nurses need to keep up to date with these changes to ensure best practice. it seems harsh for people who just want casual work but this rule is to keep the majority of nurses on their toes because there alot of them that need it! If nursing wants to continue to move forward as a profession then all of its members regardless of what area or type of shifts they do needs to be a part of this movement.

as for options, from what i know with people around me, if your registration lapses generally you have to 're-enter' the profession with a refresher course and you usually end up back at the bottom of the pay ladder. usually this is after 5 years of no nursing practice, but this may be different now with the new national rego scheme. if you are really concerned I would contact the AHPRA or your union to discuss your options further.
