Hi all,

I know there are already a few topics on here regarding the above topic, I'm still unsure about it all!

OK I'm in Melbourne, Im doing my Division Two Graduate program and Med Endorsement at the moment but am really interested in doing my Bachelor of Nursing via distance while I can still work for the money or lack there of! :-)

Just wondering, i get mixed messages about UniSA... I hear they are unorganised and all the rest... I know you have to goto the Uni twice during your course... There are so many other places to choose from like Charles Sturt in NSW or Charles Darwin University, CQU in Qld..... I just don't know which one to do it through..... Placements i thought, placed you in the town you live in? Did anyone find it really difficult teaching themselves?

Lots of answers would be great!! :)

Thanks!

doing it by distance is extremely hard and will still require you to attend online lectures, and things at specific times.

Hi Dayna,

I've applied to CQU to do the nursing degree via distance education part time. Currently I'm going the pre nursing LIFT course before starting in March.

So far Ive found them to be very helpful. I have 3 kids so finding time to do the study is a bit of a challenge, but not impossible!

Good luck in whatever you end of doing.

I think the mixed messages regading UniSA stem from the difference between studying at UniSA via OUA or directly as an external through UniSA. I studied via OUA and it was appallingly bad. Something like four people completed the course. Honestly, I just dont have words for how bad it was or space to list everything they managed to screw up.

Studying externally can be hard, personally I found it easier because it placed less demands on my time (I haven't heard of any unis requiring you to be online at specific times). CDU allow placements in your own town (but I think you have to organise them yourself), UniSA require you to travel to SA for the duration of the clinical placement. And it could be anywhere in SA, so even living in Adelaide isn't any help - they can just send you remote, make you find and pay for accommodation or fail you. They tried to send me from Perth to Whyalla for six weeks!!

I am in Melbourne studying with CDU. I have a girlfriend with UniSa and she has had to spend heaps of time back and forth to Adelaide and may even have to go their for placement because they are having trouble securing interstate placements.

I am extremely happy with CDU. I have found it easy to fit around my preschool aged children. The course is flexible and they offer summer semester so you can speed up your course. I do not have to be online at any specific times, online tests are usually open for a week at least, and lectures are presented as power point documents with supporting learning materials and readings. I applied to other courses, but when I speak to friends in other places, I thank my lucky stars I enrolled at CDU.

CDU organises my placements close to home based on my submitted preferences and health care settings that they have dealings with. I don't have to organise anything.

You will have to travel to a CDU campus for a clinical teaching block at least once (the first one) and after that they are available in Melbourne at selected times. Next one is at Deakin Burwood in semester 2 for second years.

I can't speak highly enough of CDU.

Dayna, just to clarify, if you go with unisa you will need to travel to uni more than twice. If you go externally there are 'on campus' workshops twice per year and these range from 1-4 days duration each time. If you need any other info let me know.

Hey Dayna,

You sound like someone in the same Div 2 Grad program I'm in! Are you on a Vascular ward? :-)

I'm going to do it via Charles Sturt and I'm due to start next year - hurray!

Did you decide which uni to apply to?

Cheers,

Mara.

I've heard great things about CQU. They have an Equity Outreach programme for those traditionally unrepresented in nursing (ie men) as well as some good student support outlets.
It's where I plan to study once I finish my certificates.

Hello AromaGirl,

I'm starting in CQU in March studying nursing. I'm pretty interested in the equity outreach program you mentioned.

Do you have any more details?

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Everyone

I have just been accepted into the RN/Div 1 course externally through CDU Casuarina in 2010. I am both excited and scared at the same time.

Anyone want to exchange email addresses for help and chats?

My email address is nursemum1@hotmail.com.

Hope to hear from you lovely people real soon.

Take care Cindy
