Well Last week I finished my aged care placement and I can say that I loved it. It wasnt without it challenges, beleive me as some of the stuff I saw was a little confronting however I enjoyed every moment.
The facility we were placed in wasnt the best. The staff were not very helpful, we were not buddied with anyone who worked there like we were meant to, we were paired up and worked on our own. Lucky for us some of our students are already PCAs so knew what was doing.
I found it so good to put all the theory into practice and was very impressed with how well I went.
We completed basic hygiene ( showering and toileting) feeding, peg feeding, BSLs, BPs and resps.
I would just like to say who ever is fearing theaged care placement, dont. I was really hesitant about it but loved it.

I cant wait for the next one, we are going to acute setting in november.

Well done. :D When i did mine we were buddied up for the first day or so and then we teamed up with other students and to be honest... i reckon i got more out of buddying up with another student. I learnt alot more because it was more hands on... rather than just following a nurse around.. or having them leave u on ur own because they had to run off and do something else... when u have no idea what ur doing (this happened when i had to do my first shower).. luckily my clinical teacher came along. But yeah we pretty much completed the same things as you on placement.I've heard alot of people say they havent liked aged care.. but all the students on my placement had an absolute blast and i came home with a smile on my face everyday. My next one is rehab in a few months. So excited. You will have to let us all know how your acute placement goes. :)

hi guys! i am doing my last clinical placement starting today for a full month and finishes on the 26/06/09.

this placement is 2 placements in one, 2 weeks extended care(medications) and 2 weeks acute care!

i loved the first aged care placement, because the facility and my clinical placement teacher were just great and full of knowledge!

my second wasn't good at all, our facility wouldn't left us basically perform ANYTHING except do showers and feeds thats it! not to mention my clinical placment teacher had a few screws missing upstairs, but i am really looking forward to my "first day" tomorrow!!

its great you are loving the placement! enjoy it cos it really is fun! its great to feel like that you are making a difference in peoples lives!

Hi Nalan,

I'm starting Div 2 with Healthtrain at the end of June, we were told we would be doing placements in aged care, acute, rehab and mental health. I haven't heard of any placements in midwifery for Div 2 before?

I completed my Div II in SW sydney. I had a maternity placement but did not enjoy it- it was not fast paced enough for me, the staff were extremely clicky (esp. in special care nursery) and basically all i did while there was manual BP's, baby bath demonstrations to new parents and answer buzzers. this is just personal opinion and you may well love doing those things! Good luck to you! Lisa
